Guest MATT Posted August 30, 2006 Report Posted August 30, 2006 Hi all, got a problem with the engine temp needle. You will be going along, engine temp at 90C, then it will just drop to the 50C position (as if its switched off) then it could do any of the following... Spring back to 90C - and stay there a while, then goes back down.Go up to any other temp, ie, 60, 70, 80, stay there, move between them, or go back Down to 50.Stay on 50C for a long period. Or it can just move between 90C and 70C over and over. It does it with or without aircon on. The problem got worse in spain/france, but has continued in Briton. Any ideas folks? MATT Quote
Steveenduro Posted August 30, 2006 Report Posted August 30, 2006 Almost certainly the engine coolant temp. sensor.Exactly the same happened to mine. You may also occasionally get high revs on start-up when engine is luke warm as the sender will sometimes tell ecu that engine is cold when it's not.Look for threads on changing. Quite easy to do, especially if you have ever worked as a gynacologist. Quote

MJR if you havn't already done it , yes you need to partially drain the sytem, on the mk1 dsl, its located on the coolant outlet pipe near the head right hand side , has a circlip through the whole assembly holding it in , prise this clip with screwdriver or pull it with pliers, dont drop it ! :27: , ease out the switch  Quote
Guest MATT jr Posted September 3, 2006 Report Posted September 3, 2006 ok - i will study the situation today (assuming weather holds up) and do it tomorrow (ford parts closed today, open tomorrow) thanks all MJR Quote
Guest MATT jr Posted September 3, 2006 Report Posted September 3, 2006 ....had a look today, and i got a problem. 1) theres a pipe, that im guessing comes from the turbo to the engine, i need to remove part of this pipe, in order to gain good access to what i think is the sensor below. i can remove the circlips, but the rubber pipe seems impossible to pull off the solid plastic pipe. anyone got any tips? thanks, MJR Quote
NikpV Posted September 3, 2006 Report Posted September 3, 2006 anyone got a photo of the sensor in the engine bay? any help? Quote
Guest MATT jr Posted September 4, 2006 Report Posted September 4, 2006 lol - thanks nikpv - but i meant a real, actual photo of the sensor. my problem is that pipe tho, i was thinking of heating the rubber part to make it more flexible and expand, so it will come off easier? MJR Quote
