hi all sane people ! cant fathom this one, have put a test light accross the glowplugs on my good galaxy with no starting problems and its the same as the other with problems. there be no lights on the test lamp with ignition on or on cranking, the y must work somehow ! ive noticed on the poor starter that in the clear fuel line to the pump is a lot of glugging and air bubbles even after a run , on the other gal there is no sign of bubbles, could this be the problem with poor hot firing ?

where will air get in the system ? also whatys this ive read about bleed ing the system to get rid,

am now going quietly insane

The test lamp won't light unless the glowplugs are active (IE the engine is stone cold) as there is no voltage supplied when hot, if you connect the lead to the battery negative and the test lamp to the glowplugs when cold, as soon as you turn the ignition on the lamp should light. There should NOT be any bubbles in the fuel supply, this indicates a leak somewhere in the system, most likely pre pump as if it was after pump you would be using lots of diesel. Had the same happen on a diesel with the pump in tank once it turned out the feed tube had become detached so it couldn't pick up fuel when nearly empty. Basically get under the car and thoroughly inspect all pipes, especially where there are joins between components and turns in the pipework.

martin ive been there, have a cuppa it helps, the air def wont help, eliminate this 1st , if you are still struggling try and get a vag-com diagnosis, or meter as many switches as poss yourself, not tackling mine till the kids back at school, then i'll really throw the spanners <_<

Back to your original comment about the glow plugs. If you want to test the feed, disconnect the coolant temperature sender and the glow plugs should be powered for 10-15 seconds following switching on the ignition.

This may not help your problem but it will eliminate this part of the system.
