Guest HairyPlateEater Posted August 28, 2006 Report Posted August 28, 2006 As per my post HERE I thought I'd get the other members views on possibly having long term members who contribute the technical knowledge to this site given their own higher rank than the mortals that look to them for answers. Please vote above. If the outcome is yes then we can kindly ask the mods and admin if they will oblige. Quote
Dave-G Posted August 29, 2006 Report Posted August 29, 2006 I think thats a fair idea. That bloke with the dummy that should be worn out by now seems a fair candidate for one - being as this was a result of his complaint opinion :) but there are a few more too - perhaps we'll need a poll for that too? -_- Most of the ones I initially benefited from are gone from this forum, and I have to say I have lost touch with the technical section recently. Anyway - here's another frivolous use of the forum, B) :D :D B) As I see it :D :D  Quote
Guest BagPuss Posted August 29, 2006 Report Posted August 29, 2006 As per my post HERE I thought I'd get the other members views on possibly having long term members who contribute the technical knowledge to this site given their own higher rank than the mortals that look to them for answers. Please vote above. If the outcome is yes then we can kindly ask the mods and admin if they will oblige. I think its a bad idea, the same as the post counts. We had the same problem on our Club GTI site. Too many post whores who don't care, other than posting utter shite and contributing nothing to the forum but being a nusiance. It just brings the forum down to another low, luckily this one hasn't got to that stage......yet!In the end this caused problems for the Mod's and us Admin. The site has just over 13,000 members on the forum with 4000+ who are actually members of the Club.i.e. they pay the subcriptions that contributes to the running of the Club, Magazine etc.So a lot to look after! As for the Technical status, who do you say who is worthy of this status?Everyone is techinical in one way or another, just not in the field of most.i.e., Engines, Interior, Bodywork, Paint, Chassis, Electrical etc Someone may post a few technical tips and then ask for the status which others may say they don't deserve. So then what do you do? Having a Poll to decide then asking the mod's, Admin to oblige is sorting of twisting their arm, is it not? Quote
Guest neil_wiles Posted August 29, 2006 Report Posted August 29, 2006 Ok guys So here is a scenario if I were to say this :- I am a time served mechanical engineer and have grown through the heavy auto engineering field into management although my true love is all things automotive. I have recently spent three years authoring the whole of the new technical training information and testing for a major international motor manufacturer throughout Europe. I have had two galaxies both diesel and have been running Fords for the last twenty years and always done my own maintenance regardless of the size of the problem. Would that make me technical or would I not get into that envelope, my post count would be 150 of which three were in the technical area ? If it didnt do you think I would be peeved or if it did who would make the decision ? Quote
greg_68 Posted August 29, 2006 Report Posted August 29, 2006 Am I the only one who does not see any point in this thread. Why do some members require a "greater" status than others, I am sure the ones who give loads of invaluable advice are not that shallow that they need to be reminded how great they are. What would their advanced status allow them to do? Agree with all Bagpuss's comments, who says who is worthy. There maybe specialists out there that hardly post but have a great deal to offer when neeeded, how are these people going to feel to be left with us mere mortals. Certain peeps on here already feel that the mods are above others, by creating different levels of "contributor" all you are going to do is create cliques (sp) and alienate lesser mortals such as myself. There is the danger of one rule for them and one for us appearing. You need to treat everyone as an equal, not everyone comes on here to give technical assistance but the forum would be a lesser place without them (M04 a prime example) Quote
Guest MATT jr Posted August 29, 2006 Report Posted August 29, 2006 all members should be treated as equals. yes there are very knowledgable people on here, but those seeking advice, always say thank you, and the rest of the forum know there advice is always worth listening to. MJR Quote
iainkirk Posted August 29, 2006 Report Posted August 29, 2006 As a fairly early member, I say NO to this idea. There's not many members around from the 'early(ish) days'. I can only think of Ivor E Tower, Italiastar and myself (plus a few more every time I try and think.....) I suppose you could have a category of member according to the TIME they've been a member, rather than the amount of spam, sorry, number of posts, that they've posted. For example, anyone who has been a member for 3 years could have the category of "Been Here Too Long Member" or something similar! Quote
anadin Posted August 29, 2006 Report Posted August 29, 2006 havn't been here long but as i see it we all joined needing answers, not all stay, whatever status we have outside of this forum counts for nothing, you are not forced to give advice or an opinion , you have an option , its a site for people who drive the same cars, looking for help, advice, ideas ect, once found you have the option to participate in other activities , for which many do, lets keep the forum community based , rank & brownie points are for ego-maniacs, what next pay them ! , if you click on a members name it tells you where they are most prominent, everyone has equal to offer in their own field , be that a gsoh or just a chat, when you've had a bad day, to that tech help, yes we need moderators to monitor, we dont need dictators of rank, and who gives anyone the right to judge others, lifes to short, if you want a moan theres a place on here , if you want some fun that to , each to thier own , we all have a right to an opinion , and we all have the right to disagree, thats what a forum is all about Quote

Why do some members require a "greater" status than others, I am sure the ones who give loads of invaluable advice are not that shallow that they need to be reminded how great they are.No, you're not alone, I was going to say the same thing. Why on Earth would someone feel the need to be reminded of their "greatness" everytime they log on?On a practicle side, it lessens debate, on other forums I've seen people be-littled or ignored because they disagreed with someone who was labeled as a technical guru, didn't see the apologies when they were proved correct though.....The only benefit to someone asking a question would be that they may take advice more readily from a "tech guru" however, that's not to say that gurus are 100% correct and when working on my own car I wouldn't take one persons say-so anyway.I would say that unless there is a revolt among those already aknowledged to be the most prolific of tech posters, this really shouldn't be on the agenda. soptom Posted August 29, 2006 Report Posted August 29, 2006 For example, anyone who has been a member for 3 years could have the category of "Been Here Too Long Member" or something similar!Says he who just happens to have been here 3 years 11 days. I'm just pulling your leg. A status for age is just as worthy as for post numbers, sometimes more so. It does no harm and has a defined period before you are admitted so is not open to one-upmanship. Quote
iainkirk Posted August 29, 2006 Report Posted August 29, 2006 Says he who just happens to have been here 3 years 11 days. Damn...you noticed!! Quote
Guest HairyPlateEater Posted August 29, 2006 Report Posted August 29, 2006 .....and what an excellent debate begat my thread! With everyones thoughts as vailid as the nexts, it seems, for the moment, that equality rules. Have to say I'm not surprised with the result so far. As the saying goes "if it aint broke, don't fix it" - for the majority it seems things are fine. But it's always good to find out people's thoughts on things, especially when it's the people that make forum what it is. Quote
Bigjeeze Posted August 29, 2006 Report Posted August 29, 2006 What a silly idea. No I think the forum should stay as is - It works well and the contributions are fantastic. Although I post a lot of crap I do also post on tech issues and I think ask some pertinent questions. There are those on the Forum who are head & shoulders above others in their technical and practical knowledge but then they are appreciated and admired for that without having to have a badge or medal or whatever. No leave it as it is . PS I would vote for SeatKid as he has to be the bestest member on here -_- Quote

Ok "Fixed" might not be the correct way to say it, But I read the post this morning for the first time, and it said "It said I had already voted" and yes you have guessed it No I had not voted! So if its not fixed then how can I have put a vote on ?? Radiotwo Quote
mumof4 Posted August 29, 2006 Report Posted August 29, 2006 if you pressed view results..it would then count you as a null vote.i.e.that you didnt want to vote. Quote

mumof4 Posted August 29, 2006 Report Posted August 29, 2006 but did u view results first...You have just repeated yourself really and not answered the question..If you have a problem with a poll then yopu should have asked for help and not go round saying that we fix the polls. They cant be fixed. katman Posted August 29, 2006 Report Posted August 29, 2006 if you pressed view results..it would then count you as a null vote.i.e.that you didnt want to vote. ... or that you wanted to try to fix the result which is why you cant view the result and then decide who/what to vote for. As MO4 said, you CANT fix a vote... even your own  Quote
greg_68 Posted August 29, 2006 Report Posted August 29, 2006 perhaps we should have a poll on whether you think it can be fixed.... gotta admit it threw me when I first saw the ealier polls and it said I had voted....shoulda read the page first. Quote
Davetheref Posted August 29, 2006 Report Posted August 29, 2006 Blimey MO4 Didn't realise you are a Marian. Makes you seem a lot more real and less of a fantasy to all us blokes. :16: Quote
mumof4 Posted August 29, 2006 Report Posted August 29, 2006 Im going to be sarcastic and say that maybe we should have a poll to decide if we should have a poll to see if it is fixable!.. No polls on this forum are or can be fixed. They are there so people can express their opinions freely. No post will be edited unless it contains profanities or goes against the forum guidelines Marian. Blimey MO4 Didn't realise you are a Marian. Makes you seem a lot more real and less of a fantasy to all us blokes. :D :D  ...I have absolutely no idea what to say in reply!!...speechless!! :16: :D :16: :16: Quote
seatkid Posted August 29, 2006 Report Posted August 29, 2006 I'm not voting! :16:Most polls are knee jerk and badly thought out. Take for instance the "Have you had problems with your aircon?" poll. Predictably in the early days a lot vote "No problem" only to have their aircon go awol the following month. The problem is that there you can't change your vote and the result flatters Fords and VW when they should be thoroughly castigated. My "complaint suggestion post" came about after seeing yet another "3 word story" thread. :D Why has our Forum sunk to the lows of all the other wierdo car forums? :16: On some days when I click "view new posts" I have problem seeing any questions/discusion about Galaxy's for the string of "funny" jokes - some of which I must say are just .....well I must stop there other I will promoted to the rank of "boring old git who rants a lot" :D It did strike me though that quite a few newbies looking for genuine help are being confused by the scope of the replies (e.g. guesses) and would naturally look at the "member status" which is based on number of posts and assume, for instance, MO4 is technical wizard with Galaxy electrics ( :16: no offence, MO4, thats just an example.....I know you are "man" enough to take the joke......however there is a small number of members who not only do not have a sense of humour but give dubious technical advice... No, its not a good idea to give any members special status. And that includes the present scheme. Quote
