Hi All

Our Ford galaxy has given us years of good service. We were just commenting how reliable it has been.

Wish we had not spoke as within 1 month the following faults have appeared. I can't help thinking that there is ONE comon cause for all these faults.

Model: - Zetec 1.9 TDI (110ps) April 2002.

Faults:-

Drivers door wont lock with central locking on first attempt

Fuel door lock will not release every time.

Passenger side front door has started not to open on solenoid.(within last two days)

Heater plug indicator flashing on dashboard.

To overcome the cental locking problem we have to recycle the unlock/lock on the key fob a number of times to ensure locked or unlocked.

The heater plug indicator could be faulty heater plugs as they have not been replaced since new ( I think)

Any help would be very helpfull

Regards

like suggested, it might be the relay.

but it could aslo be damaged wires between the doors and the car body.

the engine light could (IIRC) mean one of your rear lights is not working (break light?) - this might be down to damaged wires?

also, not sure where the control unit is for the central locking, but it might be under passenger seat - does your rear wiper/washer work well?

IIRC the glowplug symbol is also the "dealer workshop needed" indicator on some models?

I say this because you have conflicting model/engine details... the 110 engine was in the earlier model, and it's given years of good service. Perhaps you could ask "myself and I" which engine is correct? :(

could be a faulty brake switch which as matt jr says could manifest in brake lights not working - but not always

It could also be a partly melted fuse box (the one by the battery).

When ours melted, lots of strange and seemingly unconnected faults showed up on VAG-COM, various dash warning lights came on at random including the ABS warning.

The VAG-COM faults all showed 'short to B+ intermittent' which is the alternator output point. The short was in the melted fuse box - there was arcing between the alternator connection and the main fuse box connection.

memyselfandI - do you know where this fuse box is located? You need to remove the battery cover - the fuse box is in front of the battery and connected with a red lead to the +ve battery post. You can open the fuse box easily by squeezing the latches inwards and lift up the hinged cover.

Have a look - it'll only take 5 mins. to disprove my theory... :(

Thanks everyone,

I will check the fuse box as i forgot to add that we have also had a brake warning light on intermittently also.

Also I may have the output wrong , I think it is a 115ps model, Does that add up?

Thanks I will get back for the cure.

It's the control unit you want rather than the relay. Slide the passenger seat foward and remove the (carpet) cover. It's a slim box screwed to the floor. Report back with any signs of dampness.

as matt jr said - check the wires in the door - pillar boots - check the faq

OK

Another fault to report. Neither brake lights work!!!

Does this narrow it down futher?

Any more specific tests can I do?

brake light switch easy to do , use the search button , all explained

If you have no brakelights at all this is likely to be the switch at the top of the brake pedal, this can also (I think) be linked to the glow plug warning light appearing and to erratic engine behaviour. It is covered in the FAQs pinned at the top of technical thread here.

I can't see how this could be linked to the cental locking problems (although you never know with a Galaxy). Have you checked the door wiring and the control unit as suggested?

i did remember correctly, i did lol

check the wires between the doors and the car body.

check ur rear wiper has water getting to it (the screen wash) - if not - that water will be a swimming pool, under the passenger seat - where the central locking unit is.

find the FAQ about the brake switches - do as told.

anymore problems - call faultbusters on www.fordgalaxy.org.uk!

I would think for the water level to reach the CL ECU it would have been noticed before now as the ECU is up the dash in the CJB :)

Just had the Galaxy at the dealers. Excellent advice... the Brake light switch was replaced for

Just as suspected with all your advice. The dealers say the lock did not work, but now they have stripped it down they say it needs a new wiring loom.

Waiting again for confirmation. They did say however that the wiring loom would cost the same as the lock, surprise, surpise.

lol.

if it is the wiring thats damaged it can be repaired, rather than a new loom.

keep us posted,

Thanks All.

This site is excellent.Due to the lack of time and skills I chose to take the galaxy to the Steelers who diagnosed just as you all kept saying:-

Faulty Brake switch

Faulty Drivers door wiring loom.

I asked the steelers to repair the wiring but they said that most of the wires would perish at some time in the near future and that to do the repair right it would require a new wiring loom.

Who was I to argue.
