csj Posted August 21, 2006 Report Posted August 21, 2006 hi again just wondered if any one could help ,? my 99 tdi baby has developed a rattle it revs up with the engine and also there on tick over . havent got a clue . garage wants to run a cleaning agent through with oil to see if a shim has stuck ????. its done 96700miles cam belt done at 92000 . any ideas would be helpfull thank you csj :angry: Quote
Guest neil_wiles Posted August 21, 2006 Report Posted August 21, 2006 The hydraulic tappets employed on the 1999 TDi do suffer with dirt in the oil, however its much more likely that they are fine as on my 1999 TDi having covered 150k mile they were still quiet until a broken tensioner allowed the valves to punch everyone of them. I would ne more inclined to check the tensioner as when the cambelt was changed did they change the tensioner and if so has it failed prematurely ? If the tappets were sticky you would have performance issues and emmision problems get them to check the tensioner first. You could use a long screwdriver to listen to the noise while the engine is running and if it is a whirrring when heard through the listening stick then it is more likely the tensiioner if it is clear tapping then it may something more sinister inteh engine like small ends or camshaft but unlikely to be all the tappets although it may be only one.
