how many miles ??

Possibly the MAF - try unplugging it and see if it makes any difference to the drivability see the faq for location

How can the MAF going make the car slow down???does it not affect the torque and then not being able to get over a certain speed?i know i couldnt get over 65/70mph wen mine wasnt working and the pulling power was hardly there..i.e.crawling up a hill in 2nd whereas now i can do it in all gears since it was replaced...The OP said that the catr slowed like someone hitting the breaks..from what i know..that doesnt sound like the MAF to me.But this is only my thoughts.

I assumed that the op meant that it stopped accelerating since the op didn't specify a speed that it slowed down to! If it really slows down the I would suspect the tracks on the accelerator pedal sensor (throttle position sensor??) there are 2 tracks wonder wahat happens if they report different readings!

The ECU abandons throttle readings and the engine will revert to idle. You probably need to switch off ignition to reset this condition. Most likely candidate for reported fault. AFAIK Mk1 Tdi's don't have a limp home mode like the PD Tdi's. Around

thanks for all the ideas and suggestions ..it does seem to be a problem that is fairly common ..at least im not the only one...no concrete evdience as to cause or remedy though...been out in it agian this evening on a little used stretch of dual carriage way ..it faultered when it hit 65 then had no pull-away power and was very slow to get up through the gears from a standing start..pull over, turn off the engine and start again ..its fine ..got it up to 80 no problem and went up and down the mph scale with no problems ...pulled over, engine off for a while and then off again...this time faultering at 55...so there doesnt seem to be any clearly defined speed limit as long as its over 50....so we search on ..thanks again...H

I've got a very similar problem, But mine does not fail at a particular speed but its more of an acceleration time thing. Meaning i will get probably 8 or so seconds acceleration then i get the power turned off. But if i lift off the throttle and re-apply i'll get another 8 or so seconds acceleration, Very annoying but i'm learning to live with it. Till i find a cure.
