Tony999 Posted August 18, 2006 Report Posted August 18, 2006 After having some (non gearbox) work done on my P reg 2.8 auto galaxy ghia I am getting about 21mph per 1000 rpm in top gear e.g. 80 mph = 3800rpm (approx). I may be going mad but I am sure that it was more like 24/25 mph per 1000 rpm previously. Can someone with the same car please check and let me know what rpm their engine is doing at say 60mph or 80 mph please? Thanks Quote
greg_68 Posted August 18, 2006 Report Posted August 18, 2006 This may or maynot help. When I had my 2.8 I am almost certain that both needles pointed directly up when in top gear (i.e when the speed needle is TDC so is the rev counter). Don't know what this means in mph or revs though. Quote
Guest HairyPlateEater Posted August 18, 2006 Report Posted August 18, 2006 I don't have the 2.8, but most cars that I have had have had a very similar final drive gear ratio. Usually at 70 I've been doing between 3000 and 3500 rpm, so 3800 rpm at 80 in 5th doesn't sound so unbelievable. My 2.3 does about 3300 rpm at 70 in top gear. What work were you having done? just in case it might have indirectly affected something else Quote
Tony999 Posted August 18, 2006 Author Report Posted August 18, 2006 Thermostat housing had a hairline crack and they changed the throttle cable but on return there were some electical issues: Iterior lights/sunroof/radio and digital clock not working and warning that back door open was on permanently.Garage took 15 mins to fix and said fuse which may be true but the warning light seems an odd fault for a fuse (and the digital clock did come on once or twice before they fixed it) so they must have done something wrong even if they just blew a fuse. From feedback it seems I'm imagining things so maybe the engine just sounds different.T Quote
djx Posted August 18, 2006 Report Posted August 18, 2006 the clock, radio, int light and bootlid open warning light are all covered on the same fuse as i had the fuse go a couple of weeks ago, so this could be right, john. Quote
Tony999 Posted August 18, 2006 Author Report Posted August 18, 2006 Thanks for that - I'm reassured.T Quote
daz131 Posted August 20, 2006 Report Posted August 20, 2006 i've got the r reg model and have noticed a similar issue a week ago at 30mph it was running at just over 2000rpm but i was giving it some.at 80mph i reach a maximum of about 3200rpm but it should be more like 2000-2500rpm at a constant 80mph i had it to 110mph and didn't exceed 3400rpm during acceleration Quote
