On the whole I'd say you do sterling work, and being a mod on other sites I know how much work has to go into doing a good job to provide an unbiassed friendly fun informative forum going like this.

My only criticism (and it is small) is that threads in the technical sections should be kept a bit more on thread and without as much sarcasm and off topic chit chat allowed.

I see we all have warn bars, I say use them (fairly and after discussion with the other mods). I would also suggest making it clear that the technical sections should be kept on topic.

I'm not saying the mods should get all Hitler on the members, but I can only see use of the site being enhanced for the members (and non members that just need some help with their cars) if this is adhered to a bit more.

This site is excellent, and the chit chat and sarcasm is what makes it fun, (I'm all for joining in) but maybe it should be contained to the right place?

Insecure would be a way of describing how I feel.

I run a full time job where i can be in almost any location from London to Glasgow but mainly in Bristol, I live in Swindon so the distance makes for a long day.

I spend on average 6 hours a day trawling through posts and pms to try and do a "sterling Job" and through all of that it has been suggested that we need more mods time within the forum so if that is a what would giveyou a feeling of being insecure then yes thats where I am.

I strive to help everyone on here I am not the most prolific poster but I have had 20+ years in the automotive engineering field so possibly I post technical drivel but hey were not all perfick.

So in a long answer maybe I am feeling a bit got at and I asked Mumof4 to start the poll while I was still driving back from a very long day in the office because there has been an implication that maybe we were not doing as good a job as we thought we were and the only people that matter and can tell us if we are or not is you lot so come be honest I dont care how brutal it is we need to know so we can make things better.

There are no come backs as all comments are constructive I just want to make sure this forum really is a showpiece for those of us that want it and support it.

I thank you all for your responses both positive and negative

WTF here goes..... the worst that could happen is that I get banned AGAIN!

The question WE should be asking is what do the mods do? answer that and then maybe we can decide on how your performing?

in the past this forum was self moderating, any trolls that found their way here were dealt with by the hard core long term members and on the odd occasion the site admin stepped in! that reminds me I never did find out why out why I was banned? something to do with my post contents? so I'm told?

since and before the mods were chosen there was a noted increase in mid topic drivel/ot replys and the odd hint, suttle or not did not stop the post whores, it only seemed to encourage them!

there is an increase in foul/bad language that appears through out the forum including appearing in members signatures that seems to be tolerated!

I could go on but it's late 1.39am and I have a busy day in cape cod on the cards so I look forward to reading your replys if I can still gain access to the site? after you the mods have read this post....

Personally I think the site runs just fine both before and since the moderators took their place.

Agree with 3.5 there seems to be double standards regarding avatars.

But I don't think anything really needs moderating anyway, the excuse that it is an open forum is a bit weak.

The fact that kids maybe able to read it is irrelavant as they would probably teach you a few choice sayings after viewing some of my daughters schoolfriends Pizco sites (all the new craze apparently).

The only small fault I find with the new style site is the amount of pinned items is making the actual new threads section too small on certain sections.

Most of the pinned items are out of date or totally unused/viewed.

Maybe some cleaning up needs to be done (theres a job for the moderators 3.5)

I say keep the drivel in the posts, I don't think it will ever stop and the site would become very dull indeed without it, that said many posts degenerate into OT rubbish (like the gearstick at present).

Maybe after a while moderators can go back into posts after the banter has ceased and clean up old posts to show only the useable replies.

(see we do need them, that's 2 things now)

Neil why do you spend 6 hours a day trawling through posts?

If it is to check/moderate posts would it not be easier to say that moderators will respond to any complaints and then just look at these.

6 hours a day I'd feel insecure too.

Keep up the good work, it is a thankless task, but thanks anyway.

Why were you banned?????As you well know, it was neither myself nor any of the other mods that banned you,.so i cannot really answer that question.

As for thinking that you would be banned over your post...there is no reason at all..everyone is entitled to their opinion.Regardless of what you may think, you being back on the forum has been good for all the peeps that have needed help.and we have known who you were for some time.!!..you gave it away yourself..

What do we do...recently you may or may not have noticed that there is increased postings of spam, we have actually spent a lot of time removeing these posts as some were quite offensive.

we have edited the occasional post where it has been needed, either when a reply has been posted twice, or if the language or content needed it.Every post has to be read that is posted.

We help newbies who have problems and who get in touch either via pm or email asking for help. You may not see all we do but we are here.. usually matters are dealt with quickly.Last week was very hard on the forum..we had a lot of spam posted that was caught before it was seen.

Ok..so we have failings..we dont catch everything..at the moment all the mods are busy with other things aswell as the forum.Work..Home..Kids..(school holidays)..I know i have failings..but i hope that i have improved as to how i used to be,

If we miss something..point it out to us!!.

Right..i need a cuppa....if i can think of anything else once brain is engaged..i will let you know.

Greg..will clean up the pinned items..must admit that is one place where i never thought to clean up!!...

As i know Neil is away today and may not get onto the forum till late this eve, i will take the liberty of answering why he spends so much time reading posts..like me he will check every post that is posted and when you have been away from the forum..that can be quite a lot of posts!!..i cant turn round and say..that thread has been checked as it may have been posted on since i checked it, i may miss something.

If you are not happy with anything at all..a post..a sig ..an avatar..a personal pic...a link...an uploaded pic..just tell us!!

At least on this site..when spam is posted it is not up for very long at all.

Greg..this is an open forum and i dont believe it is a weak excuse..we do actually have very young members and i guess you are right that they could tell us a thing or two..but they are still children..and as such we would be failing them and their parents if they see explicit content on our site.

It has been suggested that we could have an over 18 section that is only open to those who have a certain post count or been members for a certain length of time...i will look into this.

some drivel is good...yes it is good to see peeps having a laugh and a joke on the forum aswell as recieving help from those who know how to help...

I will have a look in the techy section at the threads and start clearing up where needed..

We are here to help and we do listen..

Thanks for the suggestions.....i really need a cuppa...

Save yourself sometime then and only respond to items that someone complains/comments on.

I can't believe that you have to read every post on this site.

There are enough adult sensible people who are regularly on here all day on and off (bit like myself) who can contact the moderators as soon as anything that may require your attention pops up. Make use of them.

That way most posts will be dealt with within an hour if needs be. There can't be anything that bad to get on the site can there.

Surely 3 people reading every single post every day is very inefficient.

I am sure other sites moderators do not read every post....or am I wrong.

Posted

Actally at the moment there are only two of us doing this.

We do check the posts for content that is not allowed or anything else that is not allowed..

I do like your suggestion of appointing peeps who can let us know if anything comes up that needs sorting.

You edited after i posted..

Ok..yes there can be stuff that is posted that is bad..we have had links to sex sites..escorting services...links to sites that are full of virus..At the moment this site/the pics site are being hit with spam that has links to outside sites which are not good at all...

I am sure other sites moderators do not read every post....or am I wrong.

Most other conciencious forums do have every post checked, but they have global moderators that look after the whole board (like Mo4 and Neil) and also have section moderators that each look after a couple of sections of the forum and check each post. Delegation is a great thing to reduce workloads! Section mods report any gross rule breaking to the global mods who then take the appropriate action.

Maybe this would be a good way to go to help out the current mods? People could volunteer and then hold office for a month or so and then let someone else have a go if other people wanted to help out. Usually people "section mod" in the area that they post most often. If they are in the section anyway, it doesn't take much to check the other posts and moderate them where needed.

Just a thought

Some of the other foums I post on have a triangle, or a "report this post" feature that all members can use to alert mods.

Example in the top right hand corner here: (red triangle)

And the lower panel here:

I wont have a problem with this post being modded to delete the links once they've been noted.

way back when we used to have a button to warn mods about a post - Glen said he removed it to save them from being swamped

I know I am guilty of takings posts in stupid directions - but I can't help it! I do try not to be offensive I am sure I fail- What I do try very hard to do is to inject some humour into what is basically a very boring subject (unless I have that problem!).

I think that we should maintain a decent clean and safe forum - but by the same token I can't think who or why anyone under the age of at least 18 would or should be reading any of the content. In fact i would be seriously worried if a child of mine was taking time out on a site like this!!.

It seems to me that it is about right - maybe too much joking around but generally OK.

I never did understand why VR6 was banned - OK he did get a bit grumpy but he is so very knowledgable and fun too.

SO stay as sweet as you are. It's good.

Oh I changed my signature as it was suggested the use of the word Bastard was upseeting in some way. It's word that has been in legitimate Engluish langauge for at least 450 years - but hey ho.
