El Dingo Posted August 23, 2006 Report Posted August 23, 2006 hello every one . does any one know of replacement lights to fit my mk1 galaxy as i think there crap on a night . have upgraded bulbs but to no avail .. drove a 05 galaxy and they were mint . help me please :) Maybe the 05 galaxy was fitted with Xenon headlamps? If Mk1 was available with Xenons you could check at the breakers and do a swap, however, this might be more complicated than just changing the lamp units, as the Xenons in the Mk2 have an automatic levelling function. greg_68 Posted August 23, 2006 Report Posted August 23, 2006 In my opinion it is just an age issue. Headlights have advanced rapidly over the past 5-10 years or so and it makes older cars seem so inferior. I don't really think there is any way of improving the Mk1 lights as it is probably more to do with the lenses than anything else. Funny how nearly all new cars have clear lenses now (this must let much more light out). Spent my apprenticeship alongside Lucas apprentices who worked on beam patterns with the old "frosted" style lenses. Probably would have laughed at them if they had suggested clear lenses then. Quote
tim-spam Posted August 23, 2006 Report Posted August 23, 2006 The headlights on the Mk 2's are much better than on the Mk 1's, whether Xenon or not. Quote
Andrew T Posted August 23, 2006 Report Posted August 23, 2006 The headlights on the Mk 2's are much better than on the Mk 1's, whether Xenon or not.Maybe just putting new bulbs in is the answer? I had an H4 bulb blow on my Civic, which was at least 6 and possibly 10 years old. I was so amazed at how much brighter the new bulb was I replaced the other one as well. They appeared to have gone yellow with age, although there was no residue on the glass of the bulb itself. Quote
tiny Posted August 23, 2006 Report Posted August 23, 2006 You say you have upgraded the bulb, but what with? A lot of bulbs offering Blue or more natural tones to improve night vision are in my opinion (and experience)nothing more than a gimmick. Im not saying they are all bad, just the ones ive seen dont offer any discernable improvement. One thing I have used with sucess, although not legal for use in the EU are 100/80w H4's much brighter, but do have a tendency to dazzle people a bit! Quote

Hmmm... thinks back to the 50/45 Headlamp bulbs on my 1961 Mini that only had a 22 amp dynamo and how bad the lights were when everything was used on a rainy night! I remember thinking the new fangled "Sealed Beam" headlights on my Dads JU250 van were soooo much better :) Quote
