Possible Water Pump Problem

Hi,could anyone help me.My girlfriend recently bought a 98 ford ka and whilst teaching her how to drive we got a massive release of steam/coolant from one of the coolant pipes. The interior heater will only blow out hot air so i thought i might change the thermostat wich did not solve the problem.I also noticed that the fan did not kick in, as half the radiator is warm and the other half is cold. The reason i think it is a water pump problem is because there does not seem to be any coolant going into the expansion bottle from the return pipe.I removed the return pipe where it connects to the thermostat housing and i am only getting a small amount of pressure coming out.Could you please give me advice on this problem and how to fix it.

Cheers

Is the new theromstat in the right way round if it is the worng way then the pressure of the flow will keep the stat closed and only allow flow if you open the pressure cap.

It will also demonstrate the heater remaining very hot as the pressure my force the flow valve open in the heater matrix.

I think the thermostat is the right way around.I put it back in the way it came out.The round side of it was facing upwards is this right?
