Guest bigal Posted August 13, 2006 Report Posted August 13, 2006 Ok bear with me, I know there are loads of post on this, I have read all of them. I got the car on Thursday and have since found the cruise doesnt work. Today i removed the headlight and found the hose had split, so I cut off the bad bit and reconnected it to the cannister which seemed in quite good condition. Took for a spin and no difference. When i press the slide switch to on and press the button on the end of the stalk should i hear a noise? how do you remove the cannister to check its not full of water, there isnt a lot of room to get in? The brake lights work fine, is there anything else i can try, I thought it could be the fuse but i think its in with other equipment and everything seems to work fine? your help would be gratefully received. Cheers Alex Quote
Vanbursta Posted August 13, 2006 Report Posted August 13, 2006 I had exactly the same problem, eventually cruise control came back but it was very intermittent, I reseated the hose as per the many other posts and it made no difference, I started chasing wiring and found no fault with it, it turned out to be the cruise control module which is located on the passenger side of the dash to the left of the radio. In answer to your questions I never heard any clicking or other noises from the control box, and I don't now even though it works perfectly (some people say you can hear the realy click, but mine never has been audible on the new box). The canister is a push fit, there are 3 rubber mountings and you just pull the metal bracket out of the holes, when you put it back it is a LOT easier if you use some fairy liquid on the mounting rubbers, you can get away without removing the gearbox control unit (mounted on the inner wing the other side of the pump) If you remove the top of the steering column shroud (the black plastic bit held in with 2 screws with the hazard flasher switch sticking out through it), you can disconnect the 5 pin connector from the back of the cruise control switch, with the ignition on you should get 12 volts if you earth one side of a multimeter and put the other probe on one of the wires on the very end of the connector (I can't remember which end so try both). If you don't get 12 volts you either have a wiring fault or more likely your cruise control module is broken. The ford part number for the cruise control box is Finis Number 7203353 and it retails at about Quote
Guest bigal Posted August 14, 2006 Report Posted August 14, 2006 Vanbursta what an excellent reply thanks. I will try the cannister first and also get a new length of tubing. If that doesnt work its into the garage.I'm glad I bought a warranty. I hope that I can get it working before Saturday as i am going up to Scotland. Thanks again. Just another question if the cannister is full of water, how do you empty it, does it come apart or do you just shake it to get the water out? Quote
Guest bigal Posted August 14, 2006 Report Posted August 14, 2006 Well took cannister type thingy apart tonight and there was indeed some water in there, I emptied it out and dried it with hair dryer, there was a bit of rust underneath the coil, but apart from that looked ok. I cleaned it up the best i could and put it back together, but no luck it isnt working at all still. Looks like it a garage job. Quote
Guest bigal Posted August 16, 2006 Report Posted August 16, 2006 Well last night decided to take vacuum pump to bits again and try and clean it up. I did the best i could as it was badly corroded at the base of the coil. I tried it and it worked for a few seconds and then started speeding up on its own, so switched it off and tried again, but it wouldnt work. I have ordered new pump and will fit tomorrow ( getting quick at removing headlamp etc after third attempt) My question is would it be worth putting some silicon sealer round the top to prevent further water ingress? Cheers Alex Quote

Guest n-peckdd Posted August 30, 2006 Report Posted August 30, 2006 :) Sorted new speed control pump fitted. Now everything works I'm a happy chap. :D Looking forward to the drive to Scotland on Saturday now. Hi bigal, Hope the trip north of the border went well? I'm having a similar problem with my cruise control. The rubber pipe had split (replaced no joy) however as the pipe had come away I could only guess at the fitting would you mind taking the trouble to let me know the correct fitting arrangement please? Thanks Paul Quote
Guest bigal Posted August 30, 2006 Report Posted August 30, 2006 http://img138.imageshack.us/img138/919/webdscf34262pu.th.jpg Hi Paul Above is a picture of the pump in situe, as you can see the pipe attaches to the black connector not the white one. My new pump has an extra pipe on to the one shown here dont know when that changed. If i were you i would remove the pump and check there is no water in there, it may help prevent corrosion which was the problem with mine. If you do need a new pump its Quote
Guest n-peckdd Posted August 31, 2006 Report Posted August 31, 2006 Thanks for the reply Alex, No wonder the pipe was a bugger to fit on the white spigot! A picture really is worth a thousand words. All is well now & cruise control is restored. I used some fuel line pipe fom a local motor accessory shop bought for a couple of quid (although halfords supply similar for around Quote
