My 1.9TDI at tick over and around town behaves normally, temperature wise, always at 90deg. When you take it down the motorway etc. at speeds of over 70 m.p.h. the coolant temp gradually begins to rise up to the warning light coming on, 130deg. I slow down and the temp returns to normal.

It uses no coolant and hardly any oil. Its got me stumped. I`m about to take it in to the garage and don`t want to get ripped off with a load of waffle, so any pointers would be useful.

That is a classic thermostat problem give it a quick swap and it should be fine, either that or your radiator core is blocked.

I would go for the stat as the engines on the 1.9 TDi are so efficient at normal speeds that they have to have an aux heater to keep the engine at the right temperature at normal revs.

BlueArmy,

You didnt say if yours is a PD or not. I had the exact symptom and it was the waterpump, the impeller had detached from the shaft. see attched image.

I even had one grage trying to tell me that the head gasket had gone :D

I hope things work out ok

Bluearmy - did you get this solved mate? what was the problem as i now appear to have exactly the same thing

can anyone give me guidance as to how to change the termostat? - is it an easy job, or do you need to remove half the front end to get to it?!

cheers
