M90 northbound - Fife, Scotland

Vauxhall Corsa 1.2 Life

Me & 2 kids

65 mph

Front near side blow out

Lost control of car

HGV was stopped in the hard shoulder

Swerved car right, just missed driving head on into it

Rear nearside back quarter pannel hit back of HGV trailer

Back end swerved right

Car went sideways

Then rolled

Twice

Then skidded down M90 for 110 metres on its roof

Sparks and glass flying at my face, horrible smell of burning paint and metal as it skids

Life flashes before eyes

Kids screaming in back of car because we are all upside down

Car stops

Kids crawl out of smashed rear side window

Passer by pulls my door open and drags me out

All of us stand up and walk off to the side of the motorway

Son of 9 had small piece of glass in his eye which was washed out by paramedics

I have 2 small cuts on left elbow

Daughter of 8 had shock

I don't want to think about what would have happened if we'd have hit the back of the HGV head on :-(

Thanks go to witnesses that stopped to help, police and ambulance staff

Thanks also go to whoever decided it wasn't our time!

Apologies go to anyone that was held up when the motorway was closed off for an hour to remove the mangled wreckage!

Very lucky glad you are all OK

Last week in Inverness on the A9 a pensioner and two Peruvian teenagers were killed when the old fella took ill at the wheel and drove under an HGV sitting in a layby( the kids were not wearing seatbelts apparntly)

i've just read this post......my dad had a nearside front blow out at 75mph in the middle lane, in a mercedes C200 r reg.....nothing happened to the car or him, he just pulled over like it was just a puncture....i didn't know the above could've happened!

Guess it just goes to show how light Vauxhall Corsas are compared to Mercs!

I've two had front blow outs before (Mondeo & Nissan Largo) and been able to control them fine - the main problem was the bloody HGV parked in the hard shoulder! Reckon I'd have got the car under control enough to stop on the hard shoulder if I hadn't have had to swerve to avoid the thing!

Anyway, you live and learn, just glad I'm still alive!

A few words of sympathy and a few more about the Gal.

I had a explosive puncture at a tad over the limit on the M4 about two years ago front nearside ith seven adults on board and I had to get a change of underwear but on the third visit to the hard shoulder I did manage to stay there.

It was a predictable fast deflation loss of direction control but the Gal behaved very respectable given the speed and the weight she was carrying.

I have had punctures at speed an in many different cars and apart from the MK1 Astra nothing has felt as strong and stable as the Gal under these conditions so take comfort in the fact that your new car will keep you all that much safer.

Glad to hear you are all ok

Thanks Neil, good to hear that the Gal will hold her own! Just hope I never have to know first hand!

God you were all very lucky.

Are you sure it was the near side front that caused it cos it looks to be still inflated

Police told me it was near side blow out but I was still at the hospital at the time so they could have said anything!

Thanks for all the kind words again guys, makes me shudder still whenever I look at the pics!

Worst thing was the smell of the paint being friction burnt off the car as it skidded down the motorway. Was certain that we were on fire and going to blow up at any minute!

My 9 year old son was sat in the back only a few inches away from where the trailer has ripped through the C Pillar .... makes me feel sick thinking about what could have easily happened if it had been a foot further across

Drive slower guys ..... it could happen to anyone.

Strong little car, surviving that type of accident. Luckily with the Euro NCAP to help protect the consumer these days, lives are that bit safer. Glad you are all OK, has it made you a slower driver ? or were you always a safe driver ?

Do you have to declare to you insurance company when renewing or does it not count as it was on the hire car companies insurance and you are not claiming ?

I was always a safe driver when kids in the car, now I always am!

I've mentioned it in passing to my insurance company (making sure i noted the name of the Indian representative I spoke to and the date/time in case of disputes) and they said it wont count against me as it was on another policy. Luckily this years policy had just been renewed and they havent written to me to increase it so hopefully things should stay as they are. I have 9 years protected no claims anyway so should be safe either way!

Guess you've seen quite a few like this in your line of work!
