Guest bigrabdl Posted August 7, 2006 Report Posted August 7, 2006 Hi folks any sugestions as to why I seem to be getting white smoke when im driving . If i depress the clutch for a bit and coast the smoke goes away and when i start driving again it sometimes smokes again but mostly not .This only seems to happen at lower speeds . I dont have any starting problems or anything else noticable except the smell of the fumes which are diesel/paraffin like smells . Any suggestions as to what to check would be helpful .Galaxy 1.9tdi 90 bhp 2002 . Quote

Guest bigrabdl Posted August 7, 2006 Report Posted August 7, 2006 Spoke to someone today and they said it could be my timing or my fuel filter , any thoughts . Quote
NikpV Posted August 7, 2006 Report Posted August 7, 2006 white smoke can certainly indicate timing out but variable ? Quote
El Dingo Posted August 8, 2006 Report Posted August 8, 2006 I hate to say this again... but white *smoke* under power is a classic symptom of turbo failure. :) Quote
Guest bigrabdl Posted August 9, 2006 Report Posted August 9, 2006 I have no real loss of power and dont always get the white smoke but when I do there is a smell like diesel/paraffin that comes with it . Could this still be the turbo EL DINGO ? Quote

Could this still be the turbo EL DINGO ? Just a wild stab in the dark but having read through the aux heater threads it sounds like it could possibly be that especially with diesel/paraffin smell being present, you never know  try disconnecting the wire from heater and see if that helps Quote
Masked Marauder Posted August 9, 2006 Report Posted August 9, 2006 It is possible, but white smoke is incomplete combustion. That is the issue with the booster too, the way it burns the fuel can cause incomplete combustion. As for the turbo being the cause of the problem, I have never known that myself. That does not mean I am saying it can not happen. Every time I have seen white smoke that smells of paraffin from the exhaust it has been a problem with the pump or valve timing or the valves themselves. Your of course has unit injectors, not a pump as such. But unless there is an issue with a unit injector firing late (I can not see how that is happening either) then I can not see how the timing could only be out sometimes. The only thing that I can think of that would cause that could be an exhaust valve occasionally not closing properly. Quote
