latrine Posted August 7, 2006 Report Posted August 7, 2006 Hi there I have a 2001 (Y-reg) 1.9 tdi 115 bhp Had a routine service last week and there is now a noticible drop in power, at lower revs, i.e. up to 2000rpm; also a considerable drop in power up hills unless i change down gears to keep the revs >2000 Have unplugged the MAF and the problem is worse, so i gather this means no problems with the MAF I seem to recall reading on this forum that if the garage has overfilled the oil, then this may cause the prolbems i am now experiencing I've also seen posts re checking the air filter and various hoses, etc but exactly what should i be checking for with the air filter and which hoses should i be checking? any photos would be great thanks i'm amazed by the expertise displayed on this forum, so hopefully osme of you guys can help me out?! please cheers all Quote
mumof4 Posted August 7, 2006 Report Posted August 7, 2006 Hi...as for which hoses etc..i dont really know....But all i can suggest is do what i did when i had a service go very badly wrong...go back...don't ring and prewarn them..just turn up .give em hell and dont leave with out the car...insisst on getting it sorted there and then.it is your car and they have messed up somewhere..Maybe they knocked something loose or forgot to put something back(did with mine) More experienced peeps will be along soon....they cant stay away from the place. :) Quote
latrine Posted August 7, 2006 Author Report Posted August 7, 2006 if i rest the ECU, presumably simply by disconnecting the battery, can this have any effect? are there any dangers in this step, other than forgetting your radio code!? Quote
mumof4 Posted August 7, 2006 Report Posted August 7, 2006 No dangers as far as i know , apart from radio code.It needs to be disconnected for at least half an hour or so to reset the ecu.IIRC. Quote
Andrew T Posted August 7, 2006 Report Posted August 7, 2006 Five minutes is often enough, you can tell if it's worked if you look at the warning lights as you start it up for the first time after reboot, warning lights will appear for equipment your car is not fitted with (eg traction control) and then extinguish never to be seen again. mumof4 Posted August 7, 2006 Report Posted August 7, 2006 Now im sure that on here someone said half an hour at least...... ;) Quote
Andrew T Posted August 7, 2006 Report Posted August 7, 2006 Now im sure that on here someone said half an hour at least...... ;) Er yes, it was me :D But so what ? "A foolish consistency is the hobgoblin of little minds". Quote
mumof4 Posted August 7, 2006 Report Posted August 7, 2006 How can it be 5 mins for one thing and 30 mins for another???dont make sense?you said last time IIRC that it takes at least 30 mins to reset..so how in this instance can it be only 5???? ;) Quote
Andrew T Posted August 7, 2006 Report Posted August 7, 2006 I Shouldn't have owned up should I ??? Although what I originally wrote was "half an hour" not "at least half an hour". This could be because A, I was feeling generous.B, I am feeling mean today.C, I have PMS. Quote

This could be because A, I was feeling generous.B, I am feeling mean today.C, I have PMS. hmm...I think 5 mins is not long enough....is like when i switch off the washing machine at the plug..for a min or two the lights stay on..im sure that the same is with a car..that just because you disconnect the battery does not mean that all electrical impulses just go poof!!....Half an hour sounds more likely considering the size of it and all the electrical systems in it,. And what is the difference between half an hour and"at least half an hour"???? ;) No you shouldnt have owned up...........Take some evening primrose oil and you will feel much better with that PMS!! :D Quote
Andrew T Posted August 7, 2006 Report Posted August 7, 2006 Take some evening primrose oil and you will feel much better with that PMS!! ;) I'll take a couple of a couple of Pints of Marstons Pedigree if it's all the same to you - I find it cures most of lifes little ills (and especially constipation).l Quote

latrine Posted August 7, 2006 Author Report Posted August 7, 2006 Thank you both for your entertaining comments - not quite sure how it will assist my Gal, but never mind Anyway, does anyone know if the slight overfilling of oil can cause the proplem i'm now experinencing? What does resetting of the ECU actually do and may it cure my Gal? cheers Quote
latrine Posted August 7, 2006 Author Report Posted August 7, 2006 no need to apologise my dear - we're all a friendly bunch on here Quote
mumof4 Posted August 7, 2006 Report Posted August 7, 2006 Have you checked your oil?..i know that overfilling can do serious damage to the engine....do you get black smoke chuffing out the engine/exhaust?hmmm...maybe not as you havent said that you have........have you spoken to the garage that serviced it?did they use the correct oikl?# Quote
latrine Posted August 7, 2006 Author Report Posted August 7, 2006 no, no smoke I'm going to check it out on the flat tonight but i think it's only slightly over the mark Quote
Bigjeeze Posted August 7, 2006 Report Posted August 7, 2006 sorry latrine. :D Mum - I think you are getting mixed up with s*x - you think it lasts five minutes whilst hubby thinks he performs for at least half an hour ;) Quote
Andrew T Posted August 7, 2006 Report Posted August 7, 2006 Overfilling by garages often occurs when they chuck a whole 5 litre can in without checking on the sump capacity. when they did in mine (2.3) that extra half litre caused the mark on the dipstick to be about 2 cm above full. I would have thought if the oil was only a mm or two over normal it would not cause the problems you are getting. Quote
mumof4 Posted August 7, 2006 Report Posted August 7, 2006 sorry latrine. :D Mum - I think you are getting mixed up with s*x - you think it lasts five minutes whilst hubby thinks he performs for at least half an hour :D No confusion Bigj......i know the diff between 5 mins and half an hour!! :D ;) ;) Quote
gregers Posted August 7, 2006 Report Posted August 7, 2006 i really want to reply to ur post mum but id be slaughterd with wot im thinking ;) Quote
NikpV Posted August 8, 2006 Report Posted August 8, 2006 just because the it gets worse without the maf connected does not mean that the maf is ok - had a similar problem on ours (same age - 60k) changed the maf and the difference is amazing. see original thread here how many miles has she done ? Quote
latrine Posted August 8, 2006 Author Report Posted August 8, 2006 Hi - done 55k all the threads i've seen seem to indicate a problem at higher revs - mine just feels like a flat spot at 1250 - 1750 rpm or so i thought i'd read an overfill of oil can cause this - can anyone confirm? mine had a service last week and the oil is slightly over the top mark on the di[pstick - gonna ask them to take some out - how much do you reckon, a litre? - i could then alway stop it up myself with my Millers?
