marinabrid Posted August 6, 2006 Report Posted August 6, 2006 hi all just checking something, am new to towing and have put the towbar on and am ready to go tow, on hills i know its best to drive at the engine speed that gives the most torque, but whats the engine speed in rpm to keep up a hill, its a 1.9 tdi 90hp 1997 model i aint got this info anywhere thanks Quote
Grumpy Posted August 6, 2006 Report Posted August 6, 2006 I would imagine that the max torque would be around 2,000 - 2,200, but thats only a guess. Quote
andymet Posted August 7, 2006 Report Posted August 7, 2006 Hi, I do loads of towing with my 1996 1.9tdi 90bhp. When towing up hills try to keep it in the highest gear possible but if the revs start dropping away change down. If you are on a long climb and need to use third gear take it easy, tuck in behind a lorry and be patient. You will find that on long climbs the temperature gauge will start to go right of centre. On extreme climbs (7 miles up the French Alps with 1400kg of van on and a temperature of 35 deg!!) if the gauge starts to approach the red open the windows turn both heaters and fans on full and breathe a sweaty sigh of relief as the gauge plunges back down. Hope this helps Quote
Grumpy Posted August 8, 2006 Report Posted August 8, 2006 Ah happy days, grinding up long inclines with the heater set to full and the family gasping for air all the time nervously watching the temp gauge climbing round the dial! That was with my previous tow car, Im hoping the Gal will be better. Quote
Guest MATT jr Posted August 8, 2006 Report Posted August 8, 2006 LMAO,,,, ooo the fun. our galaxy gives max torque at 1,900 rpms, but when going up hill, i tend to keep 2,000 or above. on some hills you will have to accept a loss of speed. MJR Quote
