Brake Fluid

Hello everybody, the VW ELSAWIN electronic maunual says you have to change the brake fluid every 2 years. I gather that brake fluid absorbs moisture over a period and this can cause premature failue. Is the 2 years quoted to make you spend more money, or is it vital? My Land Rover is 30 years old and I haven't changed it yet (apart from the odd bleeding when I have chaged bits). My Sharan is 2002 tdi with ABS. If I change the fluid ar there any special pecautions I need to take? Great forum and contibutors.

The manual covers everywhere in the world and 2 years is a worst case scenario. But as the fluid is not expensive and it is a straight forward job, why not?

... especially in a cold, wet country like ours (I assume that you live in the UK?).

 

Also, corrosion can damage the ABS system.

 

If you want to do-it-yourself, there's a thing called 'Easy Bleed' or something like that. You get your spare tyre and use the (reduced) pressure to pump new brake fluid throught the system, starting at the nearside rear, offside rear, nearside front then offside front. This won't hurt the ABS. You need more fluid than you would doing the job manually, but it's a lot less hassle.

Aye, Gunson's Eezi-bleed, I have two..... The work very well and on the Shalaxy the reservoir is hard to get at to top up so is good from that point too.

Yes, you fill the big bottle with clean fluid, put the cap on the reservoir and connect the air line to a reduced pressure spare wheel.

 

You then simply get a glass jar, put a clear pipe (in the kit) onto the bleed nipple and open the nipple and let the fluid come through until the new fluid is coming out the clear pipe. You then repeat for the other wheels making sure the bottle is kept topped up between wheels. Finally finish off with the clutch if you have one.

 

Obviously do not reuse the fluid from the jar.
