Fair play if I ruffled any feathers El Dingo - one of my faults is I call a spade a shovel. Tact passed me by I'm afraid. :)

I really did not mean to cause offence, but the fact remains that it was more often than not... diagnosis over the internet my friend B)

Almost without fail anything I had a problem with was quickly identified.

I recall thinking at the time how lucky we were to get so many well informed replies to a fault posting. I left the almost addictive forum alone for a period of time while everything was going well. During my absence it seems that some of those were found to be the same well informed guy. Quite why he felt the need to have different names eludes me.

I guess some of the other current regulars are on holiday. As it happens I am now considering how to decide if it's the turbo itself. The fly in that ointment however is that very occasional it will clear for a few seconds... till I have to back off while in built up area's :)

Never rains but it pours :) rain tomorrow too allegedly B)

Great. You got lucky, or your problems were straightforward (or commonly found on Shalaxys). :)

So what about getting a diagnostic? VAG-COM?

Will my original 'turbo failure' diagnosis prove to be correct? (Stay tuned for the next exciting episode) :)

It probably will mate. though I still get the feeling its the turbo control/command system, because it still gets a boost occasionally.

Right - it's sorted :)

There were no leaks to hoses, so:

The other 2 faults listed were "manifold absolute pressure sensor" and "manifold temperature sensor" There was also something about positive deviation and open/short circuit somewhere, I cant remember where the guy said that was.

It had again cooled off by this time - and good fortune gave me a good area to keep my foot down with few obstacles... at a time when it was running well - untill the engine temperature guage got to about 70 degrees.

It took a lot of searches to finally find a post about the location of the manifold temp sender :D

OMG remember I got told someone had been advised to try the other maf? :( it was MAP - well T MAP to be more accurate!

That was from my sister - but without knowing the quality of her adviser I'd "filed it" :( - well it was from a girl that knows jack about cars :D :(

Another visit to my friend saw us swapping them over... O JOY
