oafcowl Posted August 5, 2006 Report Posted August 5, 2006 Ive noticed recently that when I turn the steering wheel that there is a creaking sound coming from the front of the car, it happens when you turn the steering to the left and right, some days it is loud on other days it is not, the steering doesn't feel any different, any ideas where I should start looking? Steveenduro Posted August 8, 2006 Report Posted August 8, 2006 Mine is the same. I gather from searching the forum that the most likely cause is a worn bush at the top of the front strut, and that they are a sod to change due to the damper nuts corroding.I also saw a post where the bushes were changed and the creaking remained.I'm still trying to locate the exact point that the noise is coming from before I try and get the damper nuts off. tiny Posted August 8, 2006 Report Posted August 8, 2006 It was mine that was still creaking after changing the top mounts(and shocks). It still creaks occasionally and when it does it drives me mad, but the car was in for MOT last week and typically when I took it down for the test it didn't creak at all. The garage hadn't done anything, were aware of the problem but couldn't find anything wrong, it just happened to go in on a no creaking day. Passed with flying colours by the way. Quote
arnie70 Posted August 8, 2006 Report Posted August 8, 2006 I too have had the creaking steering on n/s. Took it to my trusted garage they changed the anti-roll bar link arm ( Quote
tiny Posted August 8, 2006 Report Posted August 8, 2006 You might be onto something with the drop link thing, mine only started creaking about a week after fitting a new pair. Next time it starts creaking I will give it a good dose of WD40 on the joints and see if it makes a difference. Quote
Steveenduro Posted August 9, 2006 Report Posted August 9, 2006 Now that is strange.Mine also did not creak until shortly after changing the drop links.I wonder if it has anything to do with the quality of aftermarket links? Quote
Masked Marauder Posted August 9, 2006 Report Posted August 9, 2006 More like dry anti-roll bar bushes that you don't hear creaking because the knocking from the links drowns it out! Quote
oafcowl Posted August 9, 2006 Author Report Posted August 9, 2006 I will look at the drop links, I got them off ebay, yes for Quote
Steveenduro Posted August 10, 2006 Report Posted August 10, 2006 Do you think its worth pulling the gaiters right back and getting some grease into the ball joint and then replacing the gaiter with jubilee clips? Maybe, but for all the hassle you may be better off buying an original part and replacing the link. Quote
oafcowl Posted August 10, 2006 Author Report Posted August 10, 2006 Ok thanks, hope its not a difficult job! Ill have to get the haynes manual out! Quote
