Hmm..just been peruseing various peoples profiles and the posts they have done...i must say that there has been a marked change in peoples posting habits...and the amount of time they spend on here....very odd.

And no..i wasnt being nosey..(well yes i was)...I was looking for info about my Maf..found some interesrting remarks in one post..that the Maf can affect your brakes if there is a leak sum where???or did i read it wrong????Is this correct????as i cannot for the life of me get my MAF flush with the pipe..it used to be but now it isnt.so im a wondering if that is why my brakes are a wee bit soft i think the word is???takes longer to slow down???

I would not believe the MAF has anything to do with your brake problem,,,,,,,,had your steering looked at recently or even fixed,,,,,,,did the mechanic put his big dirty greasy hand on your disc,,,,,,,,,,,,,,or its related to your master cylinder leaking or air in your pipes, or old contaminated fluid in the pipes, or deteriotating flexible rubber pipes,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

Is there any noise when you brake, could be pads needing changed,,,,,,,,,,,,,

A nice loverly squeal is heard which goes when i dip the clutch.....so where do I start???..I was told to get them changed in 2k miles wen it was "seviced"...havent even done 1k miles since then..

Do you mean squeal from the brakes? My brakes squeal too, but theres plenty of life left in the pads and discs - they were new when we got the car 10 months ago, and we've only done 4,000 miles.

(If you do mean clutch, squeal from the clutch is usually (but not always) the release bearing.)

Well i dont know..when i brake..it squeals..soon as i dip the clutch..it stops I hear it wen i am driving..(obviously)..i presumed it was the brakes..how will i tell the difference?
Posted

My guess is when you dip the clutch you are either releasing the brakes or braking a little harder and stopping the squeal?

(If you dip the clutch when you are stationary and it squeals, then we have a clutch problem.)

Posted
I always dip the clutch wen i am braking hard....i mean when i am slowing down at the end of the dual carraigeway..soon as i touch the brakes..they squeal like a mouse on LSD!!...it is the action of the clutch going down that stops the squeal so i am inclined to believe that it is the brakes.when i look thru the alloys..all i can see is rust!!

Wow... I can only think of complicated things, like the lack of engine braking by dipping the clutch adding to the braking load and stopping the squeal.

My brakes squeal, but the mouse is clean. I mean, he has the occasional drink (of rainwater), but steers clear of hard drugs. I can stop the squeal by braking harder.

(If the discs are covered in rust you need to get out more... And brake harder!)

So..if i get this right.....by dipping the clutch when i am braking from say......70 mph down to first in about...well..quickly....the action of me dipping the clutch actually slows down the braking process??Is that right?..Hmm

EL..if i brake any harder my foot will go thru the floor!! and im out in the car most evenings either shopping or learning the routes thru swindon!

Brake squeal is normaly caused by the shims being removed at last pad cgange or the copper grease being jet washed or alloy wheel cleaner washing the grease out,,,,,,,,,,,,,,this can be fixed at next pad change,,,,,,,,,when you look through your wheel do you see a big round shiny piece of metal or a big round rusty piece of metal,,,,,,,,shiny=good,,,,,,rusty=BAD,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

when you brake how far does the brake pedal move,,,,, 2 to 4 inches is ok ,,,,, all the way to the floor,,,,is bad

A little knowledge is a dangerous thing......

MO4, You are confusing multiple pieces of information. Performance (turbo) issues are often caused by MAF problems or vacuum system problems. Vacuum system problems can affect your brakes. But the MAF has nothing to do with your brakes.

I doubt that dipping your clutch affects your brakes. You are probably pressing harder on the brakes at the same time as dipping the clutch.

Rusty brakes discs? Rust is to be expected on certain parts (e.g. the edges) but not elsewhere. In any case rusty discs dont squeal they grrrate....

Squealing discs are commonly due to

1. Incorrectly fitted or missing springy bits that should come with the pads....

2. Glazed pads and or discs.

3. Crap/cheap brake pads.

Typically brake squeal only occurs at certain (slowish) speeds and with light applied pressure. Slightly more pressure and the squeal will disappear. Try some aggressive braking....otherwise you have to strip, clean and rough up your pads and discs with some sandpaper....and check all the springy bits are there and correctly fitted.

P.s. There should not be any copper grease anywhere near your brakes :) .....copper grease belongs up the rectum of those garage mechanics that insist on smearing it all over the battery terminals/door locks/hinges etc. where it has absolutely no effect whatsoever apart from acquiring dust and dirt and then getting all over your clothes....... :)

NO!

Seat Kid said it right - you could be pressing the brake a bit harder when you press the clutch.

mixture of shiny and rust.....brake moves about 2 to 4 inch.

Seatkid..the squeal does not go away no matter how hard i press the brakes..squeal only goes when i dip the clutch..yes i do press the brake harder when clutch is dipped...if i dont the car shudders and tries to veer to the left...i had the balance/tracking done but it still does it.when i brake hard..i feel it thru the steering and my ass!! :)

I think the easiest way to fix all of MO4's problems is for someone to buy her a new car! :)

I think new discs and pads will fix it though..... sounds as if the discs are warped (not unlike my sense of humour) and generally clapped out (not unlike my sense of humour) :)

Brake pads can be hard to see because of backing plates and wheel rims etc.

What you need a little mirror with a light on a pole

http://www.bigtrucker.co.uk/images/mirror.png

and have a look at your parts and see what is making your squeeling noise.

If it is the breaks going metal on metal then you need to get things sorted asap.

so...i could strip my brakes down and clean them?..how long roughly would this take???and would i have to do all of them as i think it is just coming from the front?

:) :) :)

2 days be long enough????..can do it over a wkend then....anything in particular that i would need???jack?ramp?..what type of sandpaper..coarse or fine?

No the front and back can be done separately, the front is easier.

When you say how long should it take, are we talking Masked Marauder minutes or Mum of 4 minutes?

If they judder when you brake, then you should change your discs and pads.....do the fronts.....

A good 2 tonne trolly jack, wheel brace, brake pipe clamp and axle stands. New pads, disks if required, and some new brake fluid. I could do both sides in under an hour. Half an hour if I was using my air tools.

I was told at the service that i still had 2k left in them...i havent even done 1k.....so amongst everything else they cocked up..they cocked up this aswell??????or could i have in my over enthusiastic breaking when a truck suddenly appears..have worn them down in a few weeks?....hmmm..can i just check the pads and discs???..just to see if they need changing?..

Hmmm........bigger job than i thought then.

You can get a good look by stripping off

the wheels and looking at the pads in the calipers. You will clearly see if they need changing.
