We have an 02 Focus Zetec 1.6.

From time to time it seems reluctant to go into reverse.

Has anyone else experienced this?

If so have you tried replacing the gearbox oil with full synthetic to avoid?

Changing gearbox oil should not have any effect on selecting reverse. Does the linkage need adjusting? Do you get "grating" noises when selecting reverse, or is it simply a problem with moving the gear lever?

Hi Ivor,

Problem only when box is cold i.e. first thing a.m. when trying to reverse out of driveway. This led me to think of oil and lubrication as adjustment the same whether cold or hot.

Anyway, has not been a major issue recently so leave well enough alone,

The 'consultant' aka 'oh expensive one' tells me that this is symptomatic of a condition called 'gear block' which can be remedied by attempting to put gear into first or second gear rather than neutral and de-clutch. Apparently this knocks the gear train into line and reverse can then be engaged and believe it or not, it works

But it's hardly what you'd expect of a precision unit?

J.
