I have just recently replaced the MAF on my Galaxy as it was very sluggish. It was running great guns really quick and speedy, but when I tested it on the motorway, it gets to about 3500 revs in 3rd or about 55 MPH then you feel it kick and loose power. If i stop the car turn off the engine and startup again, it's ok again, until I reach about 55MPH and ity looses power again. Can anybody suggest what could be causing this?

Many Thanks

Is it 55mph or an identical rev range in each gear?

would probably be helpful if you tell us the model/year of the car

sorry for being over the top, but it gets very tiring when newbies ask a question, but dont tell us anything about what make/model/year/engine the car is.

but getting back to the problem...

i would have suggested the turbo is being shut down, but would high revs, at low speed but an end to that theory?

turbo pressure switch? sticking wastegate?

Just come back from work in it again tonight and it is happening definatley in 3rd gear at about 3500 revs (60 MPH) and also in 4th gear about 3000 revs (60 MPH). I have even taken the air flow meter off and this makes it worse not better, not as quick upto 60 MPH.

No wastegate to stick, it is a variable vane turbocharger. It could be the manifold pressure switch or a faulty accelerator pedal among other things. Ideally it needs hooking up to a PC and reading off the problems. Where about are you based?

I live in York, I have had the car on the machine twice now, I cannot afford for it to go on again, the first time gave the MAF Sensor error, the second reading (after the MAF was replaced) didn't bring anything up.

Hi BB,

I have a T plate (99) TDI 110 Ghia X and have the same problem as you have at the moment, VERY ANNOYING is`nt it !!!!!

The problem started 6 months ago and first came to light whilst towing our caravan home from Devon to Sussex.

Like you, the car would pull upto 3000/3500 RPM and then felt strangled and would`nt go over 55/60 MPH.

The MAF was replaced and the performance returned, but then the same problem returned and i went back into my local Ford dealer who scaned and reset the ecm, but found no fault codes !!!!

Also as i fitted the MAF (all 15 mins of it) and not paid their ridiculous labour charge to have them fit it, they would not cover the cost of a replacement MAF !!! even though it was still within the Ford 12 months parts warranty.

The fault seemed to clear for a while, but it reared it`s head again, but it was now happening when towing or solo, with the latest run to the New Forest (end of July) having us crawling along at 35/40 MPH on the motorway at more than one occasion. The car used to tow with no problem at all pre problem.

Back into the dealer who scaned the ecm (1st Aug) and found no fault codes, but the technician thought it might be the MAF again and the service dept had found a memo from Ford (published ? 2002) which told dealers to check for water ingress into the air ducting and corrupting MAF`s, this could then be fixed by replacing the ducting and the MAF with an hours labour for about

Aleady put a new air filter in and cleaned out any debris (nothing drastic) from the air box.

The more i think about it, the more i`m heading to a mechanical cause ie diaghram actuator.

I don`t get the low revs turbo spin up noise and pick up, i used to get before this hiccup.

If it was an electrical fault, there should be a fault code in the ecm, but at the time it was scanned there were`nt any codes !!

I`ve also been told it may be the EGR valve ?

Like i said it`s booked in with a VW dealer on Fri, so i`m hopeing for a better result, than i had from fraud.

Thanks,

BFG.

PS I only found this site by chance the other day and i`m only sorry i did`n t find it earlier !!!!

hi

This is my first post :)

I also have this loss of power when the engine is loaded in 3rd or 4th gear. The engine appears to drop into limp home mode, with only about half power. Turn ignition off then on and its ok untill the next time.

I have had it connected to a code reader and it says "Manifold absolute pressure". garage suggested to replace the MAP sensor. Went to fraud they werent sure which part it was as there diagrams show two components in that area both listed as just sensors. Coulndt tell me which one was the map sensor. :(

Anyway looked on the internet and found this great site :( After much reading of posts on this subject most say to check the vacuum pipes for splits, loose etc first, as any problem hear can cause lots of problems. Checked mine all were practically disintegrating, the cotton sheath goes to dust when you touch it, where they have rubbed against each other they are wafer thin. So I am going to replace them all and see how it goes. Ford says the two sizes are 3.5mm and 5mm. reading suggestions from other posts I have just bought some silicone hose from ebay 3m of 3mm and 2m of 5mm, cost me

success!!!!!!!

Changing my vacuum hoses have cured the problem. Found a 2cm split in one running to near the turbo. Other hoses were in really poor condition and were the original ones I suspect.

Untill next time

Hi all,

I took the Gal to the VW dealer (Fri) and they checked it over for an hour & half & traced the fault to the turbo not holding vacuum. They can`t trace it any further down than that.

As they don`t deal with individual turbo parts they looked at putting a Sharan 110 turbo on it, but it was a different unit !!!, so they asked fraud for a price, you ready,

That's very interesting, and I think it explains the loss of power problem I had with mine when I first bought it. The same thing was done, MAF changed - worked for a while then started to do the loss of power thing again - notably 3rd / 4th gear whilst accelerating. It then had a pipe changed, egr and other bits and pieces, eventually the car dealer (Arnold Clarke) let me take it to VW, who diagnosed it as needing a new turbo. Which is what it had (under warranty) the bill came to

AAARRRGGGHHH!!!!!!

My cutting out problem is back. After changing the vacuum pipes(one had a 1 inch split) the fault cleared. I have done maybe a 1000 miles with no problems going up hill/hard acceleration etc, but now the fault is back. Exactly the same as before. I have checked all vacuum hoses that were replaced all are fine.

Ford say it could be the map sensor, but parts department are not sure which one of two parts it is, while their mechanic says it is part of the main ecu!!

The one vaccuum pipe I have not replaced, runs from the inlet manifold along the rear bulkhead then dissapears behind the barke servo unit. I presume that it is going to the MAP sensor which ford says is part of the ECU ? any one know

Galaxy is 1997 90 Bhp TDI

If anybody has any suggestions or advice please help me!!

Hi all,

Am i happy or what !!!!!!!

Just returned from The New Forest with the Gal loaded up with 5 bods, 1 dog, 5 bikes & a caravan and all that goes with 2 weeks away and the car flew along as pre problem.

Having got to the end of my tether over the ongoing power/speed problems, i had the fault traced to the turbo not holding vacuum and i booked the car into Universal Turbos in Ringwood 01425 471421, whilst we were down there.

MY GOOD IT`S BACK TO NORMAL, AFTER ALL THIS TIME.

They ended up putting a recon Garratt turbo on it, with the total bill coming to
