hi guys!

I am getting increased feelings that my gal's fitted with the wrong tyre size.....first of all, the ghia should have alloys whereas it has steels, and then the speedo, when compared to the sat-nav's speed, its around 8 MPH out and then on a journey from scotland to home, the sat nav said it would take X miles and the speedo said it took X+10 miles.

if you guys have a tyre pressure sticker on your gal/sharan/alhambra which has data for only one tyre size, then please could you see if that tyre size matches what size you've got on your wheels (including MK2's?)

at the moment, the factory fitted sticker says 215/xx/R15 whereas i have 205/yy/R15's fitted.

thanks!

Can you put your full tyre size as the "yy" is the tyrewall size. Without this I can't calculate the rolling circumference.

sure.....i couldn't remember of the top of my head...

that ^^sticker says tyre pressure for tyre size 215/55/R16 rf 95H (the only tyre size written on there)

and my wheels are fitted with tyres of size 205/60/R15 95H

also, does that mean it used to have 16 inch alloys? i'm gutted

I think i made a kerfuffle of my first post so here gos...

To date I have seen two types of tyre pressure stickers, one which has the data for three or four different tyre sizes, you look at the relevent tyre size and check the pressure accordingly. These are usually located on the fuel filler flap.

the second is like the picture above and is located on the driver's A piller. This has data for only one tyre size. and should, I think, be exactly the same tyre size as what is fitted to your wheels.

Those of you who have the latter, can you please verify that both tyre sizes are the same, i.e, the tyre size on your wheel matches what's written on that sticker?

thanks....highly appreciated!

I have a Mk2 Ghia, which has the multi size sticker, and is fitted with alloys and 215/55 R16 'reinforced' tyres.

I know this isn't what you asked for, but hope this helps. :)

That would give a 1.9% over-reading. When the speedo says you are going at 60MPH you would really be doing 58.9MPH.

Or on a 1000 mile round trip to Scotland your looking at your trip meter saying you have gone 1019 miles.

My bammer has the right sized wheels and 70MPH on my sat-nav is showing at 76MPH on the clocks.

yes - ours certainly does in relation to the sat nav

iirc all speedos are calibrated to run under speed for obvious reasons

I know they over read, i mean why wouldn't the car companies want you to think you're going faster.....but i've read somewhere that by law it can only over/under read by 2 or 3 %......thats why you dont get a ticket for doing over something like 34 in a 30 zone, but mine definitly over reads by way too much compared to my R reg mercedes c200.....at 70 that would read around 73 compared to what i get on the gal...

Interesting - my MK2 speedo is completely accurate accroding to Mr Tom Tom - at 30mph and at 70mph.

So is one or both lying to me?

Your signature says you have a T reg Ghia Tdi , and if thats correct then you should indeed have 16" wheels / tyres as standard so theyve been changed at some time .

thanks for the info ghia-x

bigjeeze: i've been around with my tomtom in about five different cars and they've all overread....this was also backed up by some website which said that they were allowed to, by law, overread but only by a coupleish %

Wait until your tyres wear a bit... The reduced diameter will slow Tom down a bit.

This is my post from a couple of years ago on a similar theme.

Since that thread another thought has occured to me; when I was wandering around a tyre fitters waiting for my brakes to be done, I noticed that there seemed to be variation in the height of identically sized tyres. The new tyres were stored vertically on two rails and some sat higher than others by a centimetre or more, so it would seem that actual tyre size against a specified size is fairly nominal.

Mine's also a '99 T, but a 2.3 petrol Zetec, i.e. a lower trim model than yours.

I have the single tyre size sticker, it is inside the filler cap - the size stated is 215/55x16, which is what is fitted to the standard alloys.

Hope this helps!

thanks for the info....if only a couple more of you could do the same....

im surprised its inside the filler cap....mine is on the drivers A pillar we both have 99 T's

Maybe this only applies to MK1s ? My Mark2 has a list of sizes and pressures inside the filler cap which is replicated in the hadbook. There's nothing on the door pillar.

My Galaxy is a mark 1 and there's absolutely nothing on my A pillar...

The sticker on my filler flap is identical to the one on your A pillar, showing only the one tyre size that is fitted to the alloys.

My tyre pressure sticker is on the A pillar..with 2 tyre sizes and pressures.,,bit fuzzy but its been a long tireing day...in fact..so ruddy fuzzy i cant read it!! ..so ive removed the pic.
