Guest George Holmer Posted July 27, 2006 Report Posted July 27, 2006 I need to know the front axle gear ratio as my car lacks the VIN plate and I need to order one. Does anyone either know where on the car I can find this information or if someone can work it out for me. My car is a 1998 RHD UK spec Ford Galaxy Ghia 2.3 DOHC with the 4 speed AG4 automatic box and the car is the FWD type. George Quote
Masked Marauder Posted July 27, 2006 Report Posted July 27, 2006 Where did you look for the VIN plate, it is against the law for a car not to have one. Quote
Guest George Holmer Posted July 27, 2006 Report Posted July 27, 2006 Where did you look for the VIN plate, it is against the law for a car not to have one. I know this but it does not. I have no idea why and nobody can explain it. I bought it last year in Oxford and have now moved to Sweden and I am importing the car here. The car was HPI-checked and Police-checked. It has not been stolen nor does it look like it has been repainted. Ford UK refused to answer any questions about it but Ford Sweden have very kindly decided to help me and I have the application form that needs filling in. I have worked it all out with the exception of the axle ratio. I need the correct axle ratio from a list of five: 3,94:1, 4,06:1, 4,24:1, 4,25:1 and 4,53:1 I am assuming it is one of the lower ones as mine is an auto. Quote
Guest George Holmer Posted July 27, 2006 Report Posted July 27, 2006 Perhaps the car has been reshelled ? As in the old bits put on a new shell? I guess that is possible. The VIN-code is clearly visable in the engine bay and the paint looks very original. Ford says the car is genuine, the extremely thorough vehicle inspection people in Sweden said the car was AOK and no dodgy stuff suspected. I bought it at 49000 miles last year and I have reciepts going back to 1998 for work done to it including an RAC inspection when the owner before the guy I bought it from bought it from a dealer. I really have no idea why there is no Vehicle ID plate and risking sounding rude, at this point I do not care. This has been an ongoing saga since May and I need my car imported now. I have all the data for the application for a new plate except the abovementioned code, my local Ford dealer cannot help me. Quote
Masked Marauder Posted July 27, 2006 Report Posted July 27, 2006 You do realise the VIN plate is not in the engine bay for this car? It is on the B piller inside the passenger side door. Quote

With all respect, I have looked all over the place. I may be new to this forum but I am not new to cars. I am a moderator on a Volvo-forum in Sweden and a car owner and fixer of many years experience. I have the instruction manual for the car and the TIS disc, both show clearly where the plate should be and it is not there. Nor is it under any mats, in any other door openings, or in any other place accesible without removing the entire interior. I have no VIN-plate. Quote
Masked Marauder Posted July 27, 2006 Report Posted July 27, 2006 Well the five speed auto is 3.7 Other than that I have no idea. Quote
Guest George Holmer Posted July 27, 2006 Report Posted July 27, 2006 Well the five speed auto is 3.7 Other than that I have no idea. I might just guess at the lowest ratio. My local dealer says he will send the application of to Essex anyhow so hopefully, they have a better clue than him. Thanks for your help, hopefully I will get this sorted now. Quote
