Engine out job, so how much????

CV joints on VAG group cars normally last well - how many miles has your's done? Are the gaiters split?

The engine does not have to be removed to change the CV joints - why are they claiming that it does? Unless of course it's something else.

87000 miles.

Maybe it is something else. I don't think it can be cambelt related, can it? (cambelt service one week before it went wrong), however see my other post on the cambelt thread about the vibration they had 'fitted' at 2000-2200 rpm.

It was driveable after it went bang and the banging appeared to be coming from NS driveshaft area - ie more prevalent on right turn and never banged in reverse etc.

On Wednesday night and then Thursday they told me that the car wasn't ready as they were waiting for power steering fluid to be delivered. I told them to walk round to the Audi dealer next door as they are bound to have some. That didn't happen obviously!

They've still got the car - they're telling me they've fitted it with a misfire now!!!! FFS. I thought something was wrong as they weren't returning my calls!! They're now swapping parts with a 'donor' vehicle (presumably forecourt stock!!!!) to try and determine what is causing the misfire. God help us all!!

Spoke to a local VW dealer and they confirmed that the engine stays in for CV joint replacement, so will be taking this up with the Fraud Stealer when they finally fix my Gal. As they removed the engine they have obviously emptied and refilled the aircon - wouldn't have been necessary if the engine stayed in.

Also ended up with new front and tail exhaust as they were rusted to hell (I knew that - it needs one for next month's MOT, but why didn't they tell me it was blowing when they serviced it recently???).

I'm beginning to think that they did something wrong at the recent cambelt change and that's sent everything haywire - is that possible???

I think they've made an arse of it and can't fix it. We shall see.

It all sounds very odd to me, mine had CV joints replaced and took dealer 2 days with no removal of engine, (exactly same car as yours). Unless as you mention there was something untoward going on under the bonnet. Good job its still covered by warranty as it all sounds very expensive, good luck and let us know how you get on. I too have no confidence in main dealers at all.

Out of warranty unfortunately. UK warranty is 3yrs/60,000 miles. European warranty (mine) is 2yrs/unlimited miles.

I'm guessing the garage think they've fooked it up...

Sounds like there's 2 things going on here: rectification of the CV joint, and rectification of an engine fault caused by possible incorrect fitting of the cambelt.

I think you deserve a very full written explanation asap for all the extra activity, before you even get a bill.

When you do, if you're a member of the AA or similar I'd be getting them to investigate on your behalf.

My view is: you should only be paying for the labour and parts for the CV joint repair.

The very best of luck ... put a post on to say how it turns out.

I changed my CV joint, on my drive, in a little over an hour and that was stopping half way for a cup of tea.

I would want a full explaination from the dealer.

And I can not see how removing the engine as a unit and then replacing it would cause a mis-fire. You don't touch any of the engine components, just undo the connectors and fuel lines, exhaust and vacuum pipes etc, and drop it out the bottom.

They've now had my Gal for over two weeks!!

Still not fixed...they're changing the injectors now to see if that's causing the misfire which they tell me it has now got!!!

AND they discovered that the flywheel was u/s apparently. Can't quite understand how I was managing to drive the car if that was the case???

If I have to drive round in this poxy Fester courtesy car for much longer I will SCREAM! The only benefit is that the miles are going on their car and not mine. But 140 miles/day isn't in a Fester isn't First Class driving.

I thought they might have fixed it whilst I was away - been to Espana for 4 nights. Got back yesterday and phoned the Stealer....still haven't changed the injectors....GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR!

Sadly the Gal will probably be going as soon as I've got her back and MOT'd her, as

a) I suspect the downward spiral of repairs is approaching

:D I can make 6p/mile profit driving a 2.2 Vectra SRi (I'm currently losing 3p/mile)

c) I think I ought to let someone else take her past the 100,000 mile mark and

d) I want something with a warranty again!!

sounds like they have fooked up big time when they changed the cambelt and are trying to cover up the fact :( ,when you get the car back i would be inclined to get a written statement as to what they repaired and the reason why, engine out for replacement cv joint my arse , misfiring probally because they have damaged the engine with poor cambelt fit in the first place, start thratening with solicitor time me thinks ;)

Was the O/S engine mounting bracketry correctly replaced? This is removed when changing the cambelt, and if the bolts came out and allowed the engine to move around and drop, the damage could be quite severe - could conceivably damage the driveshafts as well.

Mr Maruader?

Can you describe how to change CV joints on a Galaxy as I see you have done them your self?

Under towing load I am getting a bad vibration which goes when I lift off so I have suspected its CV related?

Cheers

Harvey

Just a guess but I suspect that the dealer Iainkirk talks about in his original thread is GK group Carlisle .......... just my opinion but what a load of numpties they really are ........... had nothing but bother with them every time my Galaxy goes in for any work ........... so much so I wont use them again ....... the place is run by total morons and their "Master Technicians" leave a lot to be desired when it comes to mechanical knowledge. Every time they have had my car it has been in for at least a week while they get their act sorted out, even for the most minor of problem diagnostics and repair. The service technicians seem unable to diagnose a problem with any confidence, seemingly resorting to trial and error part replacement (at my expense and at

Lol, back when this post was started it was probably CG Ford (its a bit of an old one!)

Agree with you on GK though, their paintshops even worse than their service side and if anyone from GK is reading there welcome to come and look at my mondeo bumper.
