Guest Mikedixon7 Posted July 25, 2006 Report Posted July 25, 2006 I have an 02 1.9TDI and I have had problems with the performance in all gears. When I turn the ignition key off and then on again the power returns. I have had a re-con turbo fitted, Air Management Valve and Air Mass Meter. The problem still persist and even the ford dealer wont look at it now. I called the turbo company where I purchased it from and they will now replace it with a brand new one due to the problems and they said maybe it could be faulty. I have spent Quote
dulux72 Posted July 25, 2006 Report Posted July 25, 2006 Hi You need to get the fault code read by someone with VAG COM.Where in the country are you. I am sure that someone here will be close with the kit. That way you will know why the car keeps going to 'limp mode' eg the loss of all power. This is being reset when you restart the car.The fault is when a parameter of the ECU is outside the programmed values.Having the fault code read will point to the problem. Good luckDulux Quote

dulux72 Posted July 25, 2006 Report Posted July 25, 2006 I'm near Bath but there may be a member nearer to you.If not then maybe we could meet somewhere and I'll run Vag com on it and see what it shows. Just a thought ..... why not take it to another ford dealer and get them to run their fault reader on it.With a copy of that info someone here will be able to help. OR the engine is VW so a VW dealer would be able to do the same. Quote
Guest Mikedixon7 Posted July 27, 2006 Report Posted July 27, 2006 Thanks for your help.Thye car is now in it's 4th garage a diesel specialist. They have replaced the Air Mass Meter and no different. They seem to think the re-con turbo that was replaced could be faulty. I have a brand new turbo being sent and hopefully they are correct, if not I give up !! Quote
Dave-G Posted July 27, 2006 Report Posted July 27, 2006 My sis recently had this - power drops to "get you home mode" I also had it about 5 years ago - and a VW specialist suggested I check my brake lights - yep one was out. It sounds like an intermittent brake light switch fault - precluding total failure, change it. plenty of these threads to search for too. ATB Dave Quote
Guest Beaky Posted August 23, 2006 Report Posted August 23, 2006 Hi there, This problem is happening on our Galaxy too (51 plate 130PS Tdi).I believe the problem is over-boosting, which is then picked up by the ECM pressure sensor, which then puts the engine into limp home mode. You are able to drive around the problem by keeping the engine revs say below 2500RPM as due to turbo lag you do not get boost until above this speed. I used to calibrate Engine Management Systems in my earlier career, but we are dealing with a mainly mechanical system with a few electronic sensors and actuators, so it's not always possible to trust what the ECM trouble codes say..... I have not tried reading any codes out of the ECM, but based on my experience and knowledge of this type of system I will be following the following line of attack: 1. Check the vacuum hose circuit and diaphragm in the wastegate actuator is not splitUse a vacuum pump with analogue gauge connected directly to the wastegateIf a vacuum is not held when connected directly to the wastegate, I will try 2.If a vacuum is not held when connected to the vacuum harness, I will try 3If a vacuum is held, I will try 4 2. Replace the hose connected to the wastegate and check to see if vacuum is held.If still no success, then I am afraid a re-conditioned turbo is required, as the diaphragm must be split (this is integral to the turbocharger). This causes an overboost condition, as even though the ECM applies a vacuum to the wastegate, the wastegate does not physically move and reduce the boost poressure. 3. Check all hoses on vacuum circuit which control the wastegate.Any leak in the hoses to the wastegate cause the wastegate not to open and results in an overboost condition. 4. Replace the boost control solenoid valve. These valves are proned to sticking. They are basically PWM [pulse width modulated] valves which are controlled by the ECM and it controls the vacuum pressure to the wastegate between full vacuum and atmospheric pressure. If the valve sticks, then the ECM thinks it has applied a vacuum to the wastegate diaphragm, when in reality it has not, causing the overboost condition. I hope this is useful to anyone experiencing the same problems as us, and will keep you posted when we get it sorted.Don't hold your breath though as we are able to drive around the problem (see above) and we have other priorities..... tim-spam Posted August 24, 2006 Report Posted August 24, 2006 This problem is happening on our Galaxy too (51 plate 130PS Tdi).51 plate = 115PS You are able to drive around the problem by keeping the engine revs say below 2500RPM as due to turbo lag you do not get boost until above this speed.Boost 'cuts in' at around 1400 - 1500 rpm with the turbo vanes set to maximum boost by the engine controls. The turbo vanes should start to progressively back off at between 2000 and 2500 rpm to prevent overboost. This engine is not equipped with a wastegate, but has a Garrett type variable vane turbocharger. However, the approach of thoroughly checking all of the vacuum hoses and their connections is sound. Using VAGCOM to interrogate the ECM would also be a very good idea, as this will identify whether or not the engine is being overboosted - it would also tell you if there are any problems elsewhere such as a faulty brake light switch. It generally gives very accurate information and is a very good diagnostic tool. There are many other threads on this problem, so you should be able to find as much help as you need to fix your problem. Hope this helps. Quote
Guest BFG Posted August 26, 2006 Report Posted August 26, 2006 Hi all,I had the same problem as above and it was finally traced to the turbo not holding vacuum and a recon turbo has just been fitted and the gal is back to pre problem performance. The local ford dealer was unable to trace the fault, so i took it to a VW dealer. The turbo was replaced by Universal Turbos of Ringwood 01425 471421, their worth a call, as they told me exactly what the car was doing and why.BFG. doubleone5555 Posted August 31, 2006 Report Posted August 31, 2006 hi, am uncertain if this may help you but...........may 2005 bought a 1998 1.9 tdi galaxy has run intermittently like a pig on occasions but when its good its etc etc . 3 weeks ago i happened to bump into a mini cab driver and got chatting at the pumps as you do same model year and so on. asked him how many sensors he had replaced etc etc. reply was, you are in a shell garage have you not noticed how much better your gal runs the day after you filled it at a shell station. lots and lots of memory recalls and....... yep for the last three weeks have kept it full of shell diesel and am thinking of phoning the guiness book of records powers up response is up no hesitation until we get down to a quarter tank, fill up and no problem againold minicab drivers god bless {only when not moving}whats to lose?
