hi Guys,

1.9td1 90bhp 1999. failed on exhaust emissions. free acceleration smoke test.

details:-

test limit applied 3.00 1/m

absorption coefficient 4.89 1/m

4.46 1/m

4.62 1m

mean absorption coefficient 3.67 1m

mean absoption coefficient after correction 3.66 1m

result FAIL

Reading the threads on exhaust emissions is like a horror story,

Is their test gear working? An 'Italian tune-up' will certainly reduce the smoke levels, but the TDI engines are usually very good without this. One other thing to bear in mind however - how do you normally drive? 50+ mpg is a very good figure, and would imply that you drive the car gently, so a good thrash on the way to test would be a very good idea. This will blow out much of the loose soot that accumulates in the exhaust system - one of the problems with a soot test (which is all it is) is that the test can measure soot deposited over time and not that which is being produced by the engine at the time.

By the way, the large

Does it have a tuning box fitted or has it been remapped for higher power? If so, these are to blame.

If not, try the Italian tune up method which everyone should try before taking an MOT (watch out for old cambelts though!) Make sure you use good quality ULSD diesel too.

ive recently had my car mot,d the tester said they see alot of diesels that fail because they are not driven,i:e school runs and he said to me that if mine had fail(its the 1st thing they did)then to get some injector cleaner and take it on a 50 mile thrash then bring it back, hth.

Booked the Gal in for a retest this morning. Last night i took her for a real good thashing through the gear box, for extra measure I did a John Cleese from Faulty towers and thrashed the Gal with a birch stick, and again this morning thrashed her all the way to the MOT station, promising her i would forgive all past grievances such as 2 MAF sensors, gear box failing, turbo packing in, 3 brake light switches, air con not working, etc etc, if only you will pass this emmisions test!!

Well it worked and passed MOT with flying colours all emmisions are ok.

So tonight she will be sitting in the garage surrounded by rose petals with me on my knees saying i love you godess shalaxy. Well until something else blows ha ha.

Cheers guys

Talking about the MOT diesel smoke test, I came across this leaflet the other day

http://www.dft.gov.uk/vosa/repository/Diesel%20Smoke%20Test%20Card%20July%2009.pdf

The fact that they are at pains to point out it shouldn't damage your engine indicates that it could.

No way to avoid it and I guess they are referring to the high revs but whats the situation guys and is there a similar warning for the petrol emissions test?

Nope petrols are measured at idle and fast idle, the "red line" test as its known to most MOT people is an incredibly stupid test IMO and relies entirely on the owner having looked after the car - I would be highly suprised if you have any course for compensation should it get damaged during the test...

The official wording is that its taken to the govener, there is no mention of a minimum or maximum rev value so there is nothing to stop you adjusting the redline down a bit before taking it

The last 4 new cars (all less then 2 years old) have had an inbuilt neutral redline at about 3K, ie if you are idling and put your foot to the floor it will only get to 3K - wonder what happens there?

Thanks for that - gosh, makes me think about buying petrol version when i think of what they're doing. She rarely goes over 2000rpm. But i love the 40plus mpg on a loaded car this size!
