delboyt Posted July 19, 2006 Report Posted July 19, 2006 hi guys a friend wants to get a topup kit for his air con where can he get it & how much is he looking at for it?it's for his ford cougar cheers for looking Quote
Guest MATT jr Posted July 20, 2006 Report Posted July 20, 2006 yeh, we have the aircon kit from halfords, was worth it. i checked my aircon yesterday, with the little gauge thing it comes with, and its still reading "filled" so since we filled it the 1st time with this kit, whatever leak has been sealed. (i suspect joints just needed the oil or whatever is in the gas) MJR Quote
sanjsanj Posted July 20, 2006 Report Posted July 20, 2006 I just went to halfords yesterday and they had a sign saying Air con check Freeantibacterial removal and virus killer 15ish quidregas 49 quid with the regas you get that middle one free, to remove that distinct air con smell. good value I think! Quote
marinabrid Posted July 20, 2006 Report Posted July 20, 2006 you can get a carplan product that you pop inside the car with the aircon on and push the cap and off it goes, you go have cuppa or your favorite tipple and when you return the product has killed the bugs and left a nice fresh smell for you, get some at my shop ..... My Webshop got good reviews from customers just type in air con and the product will appear. like magic it is. Quote
Masked Marauder Posted July 20, 2006 Report Posted July 20, 2006 Thats not a can of spray Martin....... ......... it is a plug! Quote

Masked Marauder Posted July 20, 2006 Report Posted July 20, 2006 I found this site good on price and service: http://www.car-air-conditioning-supplies.c...ome.php?cat=254 I have bought stuff off Stotty in the past, he is a good trader but his prices are a bit on the high side by todays standards. But then he does sell stuff that no-one else does too. Quote
Guest chrisH Posted July 20, 2006 Report Posted July 20, 2006 I tried to add some of that stuff from Halfords to my Gal on Monday. It sounded like it was going in, a lot of hissing etc but when i come to try the air con later that day, nothing. It didnt even make the click noise under the bonnet. I dont thing the stuff from the tin went in, i think i just let out what remaining gas there was. Anyway, ended up going to a local guy, he relived me of Quote
MrT Posted July 21, 2006 Report Posted July 21, 2006 When I have used the top-ups there has been no hissing, just a very cold can that gradually gets lighter. Quote
Guest thecodfly Posted July 27, 2006 Report Posted July 27, 2006 hi just tried the top up can from halfords, sounds like it was going in one end and straight out the other, lots of hissing, was no strange smell though, and car was no colder, am guessing may have a knackered air con, or i am not very clever, regards waine Quote
sepulchrave Posted July 27, 2006 Report Posted July 27, 2006 You could be right on both counts! :16: Quote
Guest major Posted July 30, 2006 Report Posted July 30, 2006 I just went to halfords yesterday and they had a sign saying Air con check Freeantibacterial removal and virus killer 15ish quidregas 49 quid with the regas you get that middle one free, to remove that distinct air con smell. good value I think! I went to halfords and they are completly useless, the comment was if you cannot see both pipes then we cant do the job. they wernt prepared to remove the indicator (one screw) to get to the lp pipe. Quote
MrT Posted July 30, 2006 Report Posted July 30, 2006 Couldn't you overcome their uselessness by undoing the screw for them and showing the pipe? On my model both pipes/connectors are at the top front of the engine bay. Quote
delboyt Posted October 13, 2006 Author Report Posted October 13, 2006 i got a mk1 galaxyanyone got a piccy as to where i top upthe air con plzz. it's working at the moment but i will need to topit up sometime in the future.when do i know it's toped up using the halfords can ?do i need to buy the guage aswell ? Guest HairyPlateEater Posted October 14, 2006 Report Posted October 14, 2006 IIRC Halfords also do the recharging kits with a pressure guage attached. Could be wrong though. Quote
MrT Posted October 14, 2006 Report Posted October 14, 2006 Have you seen this article on the damage that some sealants can do to aircon systems? Quote
teresa Posted October 14, 2006 Report Posted October 14, 2006 makes very interesting reading that mr T Quote
Scorpiorefugee Posted April 12, 2007 Report Posted April 12, 2007 I've just got a top up can from Halfords but the connector doesn't seem to fir. It goes on but will not latch down and the gas escapes when I press the button. Anyone had any experience please. Quote

It goes on but will not latch down and the gas escapes when I press the button. Anyone had any experience please. Are you sure you are attaching it to the correct point in the system?I tried one of the Halfords things last year, and it went on o.k. but I found the whole thing a bit hit and miss, with the gauge showing inconsistant readings. In the end the body of the thing broke in half allowing all the stuff to escape everywhere leaving an oily mess all over the place. I took the bits back to Hafords wrapped in a rag and got a full refund, then took the car to a air con specialist for a proper job. Not that it did any good because the compressor has packed in! ;) Quote
Scorpiorefugee Posted April 12, 2007 Report Posted April 12, 2007 Thanks for your interest. I'm using the same point as shown in the diagram in an earlier post. The connector on the kit seems to be like a garden hose connector and fits the access point perfectly but instead of having a recessed groove on the access point, there is a raised hexagonal bit that stops the connect sliding on far enough to seal. There is a similar raised bit on the picture so I can only assume that the two are not compatible. I think a trip back to Halfords is the best bet but I should be happier if someone who has used one of these thing successfully could comment. Ron. Quote
Scorpiorefugee Posted April 13, 2007 Report Posted April 13, 2007 Bingo, Sorry to hear about your compressor - sounds expensive! It sounds like you had the same problem with the connector but a bit more severe. It's reassuring to know that Halfords were so understanding. Quote
jkspoff Posted April 13, 2007 Report Posted April 13, 2007 I wonder just how many Galaxy owners will have their windows down this hot weekend coming, instead of using their faulty air con, as its forecast up to 80C for most areas ! http://news.sky.com/skynews/article/0,,30000-1260364,00.html Quote
