oafcowl Posted July 14, 2006 Report Posted July 14, 2006 I have a 1998 1.9tdi galaxy, the rear wipe has been erratic since we bought the car 5 years ago, now there is no wipe and no wash!. Checked fuses none have blown, The wipe comes on sometimes but wont turn off until you turn off the engine. Any ideas? Quote
Guest HairyPlateEater Posted July 14, 2006 Report Posted July 14, 2006 Sounds like a relay problem to me. Anyone with TIS care to advise which one it might be as a starting point? Quote
Masked Marauder Posted July 15, 2006 Report Posted July 15, 2006 It could also be broken wires in the tailgate loom. Quote

Masked Marauder Posted July 15, 2006 Report Posted July 15, 2006 I don't think it will be a relay, if a relay sticks on then the wiper would be working even with the ignition off. Quote

Could try taking the wiper arm off and trying it. if it turns better with the arm off then would guess at a worn motor (less strain on the motor with the arm off) other than that no idea sorry! As for the wash not working ... IIRC the rear has a separate pump from the front so could be that or a break in the hose somewhere (usual place is underneath the passenger seat) but you would notice water ingress if the break was somewhere in the cabin area. Can you hear the pump working when you push the wiper stalk forwards? Quote
oafcowl Posted July 15, 2006 Author Report Posted July 15, 2006 Yes, I repaired the broken pipe under the passenger side dash 12 months ago and it all worked fine until recently, as for the washer pump, no you can't hear it working, and the wipe works inermitently, but once it starts it wont stop!! until you turn off the engine!! GREMLINS!!!??@@??!! Quote
gregers Posted July 15, 2006 Report Posted July 15, 2006 this defo sounds like wires broken in the tail gate, had this happen to me on my old gal, they tend to be tight around that area so the ammount of times the rear door opens and shuts no wonder the wires fail,i would attempt to check as thorughly as possible round that area, hth regards gregers Quote
oafcowl Posted July 15, 2006 Author Report Posted July 15, 2006 cheeers, I'll have another look. Quote
