Its the same on a MKII so if your really up for a roasting have a look at Mumof4 thread regarding the clunking and the other is the thread regarding Engine Torque Beam/bar from Ches100 both are about the roll restrictor.

It is a rubber mounted engine roll restrictor on the bottom of the gearbox locating the engine and gearbox into the chassis and limiting the roll of the engine during torque transfer.

It is known that the mounting bolts fail and cause the engine to rock within the engine bay causing failure of other components such as pipes and ducting.

the bit of kit your looking for <_< looks like this :( the most common failure is the bolt that locates in the flat end of the roll restrictor ( the right hand end in the picture) the end that mounts onto the engine, if your lucky it will have sheared and left enough of the bolt sticking out of the roll restrictor so that it's an easy job to remove it! if not i find drilling a small hole in it and running a stud remover or another bolt into the hole does the job :) i have redrilled and tapped the hole in the roll restrictor a slightly larger size to try and beef up the bolt and lengthen it's life !

mine has gone four times in the last 5/6 years :D so i'm quite good now at diagnosing the fault and doing the repair on the drive way just using the standard jack or beaching the car on the curb and doing on the road side :D

yes, you can do it on the road side, even better pop the bonnet and get someone to rev the engine while you watch it! if it jerks back and forth savagely then the possibility is that it needs doing? if it just rocks back and forth gently in a controlled manner then it's most likely ok? you can even rock the engine back and forth by hand if it has gone in some cases!

But do it gently! You could damage things if you are not careful!

you dont even need to start the engine, when mine went on my gal you could move the engine yourself by grabbing the pipes, but you certainly dont want to driving it to much coz you could end up damaging the cat(so i was told).

sure I've read somewhere that the air con pipes break with the flexing if driven too long

they can if you drive excessive distances or hit the go pedal a bit to hard! mine breaks as the roll restrictor hits the road a little to often for it's own good at times! i now have a nice hole worn through the under tray!

When mine went on the MK1 - you sure noticed it! My wife said "theres a funny noise coming from the engine" Yep it was the engine trying to climb out of the car!!

Mine was just a broken bolt - so fixed easily. But it did crack the exhaust and eventually became a break just behind the CAT - I had to bridge it with a section of pipe which I used clamps to hold - It must be OK as it has passed two MOT's so far.

Fix it quick!

Noise for back on Friday, exhaust hitting undercarriage, checked the Roll restrictor - broken not sure where at moment.

Where have you sourced the Roll restrictor from and how much does it cost?
