Ok, just had car serviced and selector cables sorted a couple of days ago.

the 2,3 and 4th gears are very loud in the clunk department and sound like they are grating.that loud i had peeps looking at me as i went thru bassett today!!and i could hear it over my music which was belting out.

Also..engine even though it sounded so quiet the day i picked the gal up...now sounds very rough.almost like metal on a grater...again..can hear over music.

another thing about the gears, even though they clunk they are gliding into place..very fluid...apart froom when go from 3rd or 4th to second,

I know i need to take it back....but is there anything in particular i need to get them to look at???i know they didnt check the roll restrictor as they couldnt find it!!..could this be it???but if it was,why are the gears so fluid it feels like they are skating on ice????i feel no clunking in the car but i can hear it from under the car...

Thanks.Maz.

ok..rang garage...all mechanics have gone home..guy i spoke to claims that they dont look at gearboxes...hmmm...so how did they repair the cable then????

also if i bring the car in on monday it is at my expense...i dont think so i told him as the engine did not sound that rough before i brought it in.he says the roll restrics help the car as it goes round corners??????bleedin hell..ill strip the bloody thing meslf...it really sounds like crap..hubby thought the suspension had gone when he drove it earlier it was that loud!..ah well..time to get on the floor and have a gander.

Ok..very annoyed to say the least now..opened the bonnet...not impressed, MAF was not fitted correctly and also disconnected., the 2 screw thingies that hold it to the big air filter thingy were not in properly..also there is a screw at the back of the air filter box which is not in properly...(pic)..i cant budge it..looks like its just been whacked in.

I have taken pics for the garage and fixed what i could..

considering they had done an oil change and new oil filter..the oil is jet black but the filler cap was swimming in fresh oil..had to get rid of the fresh oil around it to get to the filler cap!!.when the engine is revving..it doesnt move too much..turn it off and it moves about 2 inches.

so..question...oil done on thurs i think it was.....would it go black in a couple of days if done correctly????

I really need sum help here please....as there is no way i trust the garage to repair what ever it is they have done!!

It's very irritating! You take a car in for some easy-peasy work (like a service) and they can't even put the damn thing back together properly.

Some are better than others, but the Ford dealer that did our aux. coolant pump under warranty didn't even pull the rubber mountings through the back plate... He broke one and I suppose gave up after that. None of the plastic bits (around the battery) were fitted properly, either.

We got the Gal back today after aircon warranty work (done by an independent in Maidenhead, Berks.) and it looks like everything is where it should be (phew).

You should be able to check the roll restrictor easily enough - stand to one side of the car with the bonnet up and get someone to (gently) try to pull away with the handbrake firmly applied. The engine will rock on its' mountings. To much movement can cause other damage, so if you suspect the RR be careful!

Re: gearbox, it sounds like the cables are badly fitted or snagged - maybe the routing is incorrect?

Does the car run smoother with the MAF reconnected?

Oh yes, maf is no prob, pulls away like it should do etcc....the noise isnt coming from the maf..as you are looking at the car, its coming from the left hand side...its bloody awful. :) Im well pi55ed off.i will go see the garage on mon..but they aint touching it..no bloody way.id rather do it myself if i can.that screw/nail sticking up is really worrying me though.i cant budge it.

In the diesel versions, its very dangerous to drive in the wet without the undertray as the steering pump pulley gets sprayed by the offside wheel and slips readily giving total loss of assistance - very scary when it happens (usually on a bend or going round a roundabout).

They have not only not serviced your car correctly, but also put your life at risk!

p.s.

i am out this eve and will be travelling a fair distance

I hope this reply isn't too late ....or that it don't rain tonight...

Tell them you will be reporting the matter to trading standards, and you will accept nothing else other than a free courtesy car, and all faults caused rectified at their expense.

Far too many garages (main agents inclusive) are still getting away with dreadful low standard of service, and most are totally incapable of even the basics.

Whats the mileage of your Gal mumof4?

Blimey,i am shocked, didnt realise that it could be dangerous. No, it hasnt rained but i washed the bloody thing before i went out!!the steering seemed light at first but then was ok.

I shall point out what you have said SK to them,I must say that i am still fumeing.

I took pictures of everything, including under the car...and down thru the engine.

my gal is on just over 57k now.

The service i got was lower than low standard!!it was disgraceful..and i will be making that clear when i see them tomorrow.

Just one thing before you "kill" the roll restrictor has nothing whatsoever to do with the driving of the vehicle round corners or in straight lines it restricts the roll of the "engine" when applying and releasing torque to the drive shafts.

The torsion system the garage appear to be discussing is the "antiroll" bar at the front which is the system which transfers torque from one side of the suspension to the other through the well know drop link assemblies, this will affect the driving and cornering but will not affect the "noise" or rocking of the engine.

As for the undershield it was there for sure and if its not then they have removed it and have put not only your life at risk through the vehicle not being in the "designed" condition but also that of your family and friends, water on the steering pump belt is not a friendly situation I have had it on two occasions and Arnold Scharzenigger would need to be at the wheel to maintain directional control when it goes.

Trading standards or maybe even the Ministry for transport as it is a safety issue would be a couple of phone calls I would be making prior to returning "at your expense" to the garage.

Best of luck.

Turned up at the garage at 8am on the dot as they were opening the doors.

Ok, undertray back on..that was a laugh as the guy couldnt fit the bloody thing on!!had to get his boss to come do it.They knew after i picked the car up last week that it wasnt finished!!!!!!!!!But they were too busy to call me ffs. When i repeated what sk said, i was told "all cars suck up some water and it does not do any harm".

i was watching them fixing the car when the boss came out and asked me to move as i was making his lads feel uncomftable!, i just turned round and gave him a right gobful.Pointed out that i will be contacting trading standards, that he put people at risk,it was my car, they messed up,and if his lads were uncomfy then that was not my problem as i wasnt budging!

Neil, they refused to look at the roll restrictor and to be honest i will take it elsewhere to be looked at.

I drove very carefully this morn as it is raining here....if it had gone haywire..there is no way i would have been able to do anything!!

whn i first walked and and explained why i was there they asked for the car for the day and i wen i mentioned a courtesy car i was informed that they were all out..i said that there was no way on this earth i was walking because of their mistakes and that i would sit and wait till it was done!

They had to move a few cars out of the garage to get mine in...think i was putting customers off as i was scowling that much and voicing my opinions of their mechanical skills!!..i really was not a happy bunny .

Anyway, the screw was just sitting there, not fixed in so that was done ok....i lifted the bonnet to be sure when i got the car back.

I got offered a free service and mot check when the time arrives as compensation...i just looked at them and said that they had to be joking!!..i asked for free alloys!!!!..then they just looked at me!! <_< ah well, if you dont ask....

so, am composing a nice letter complete with pics to send to trading standards and whoever else i can think of to get these monkeys sorted out!.

Tim Spam......they used titan sumit or other 5w-40w oil for a tdi.pd engine.

Thanks everyone...needless to say that my recommendations for this garage to my friends will be what a bunch of useless numptys they are.(and thats being generous.)

Well done mumof4, far too many people would never check work carried out, and would also never complain. I have started to check the car for work completed now BEFORE I pay anything, they always look at me strange when I ask to check the car over, but when I explain the incompetence of other garages they are always ok about it, but a bit apprehensive ! Once I've checked the car I will then pay. You are in total control until you've handed over the hand earned cash, or chip 'n' pin these days ! <_<

as fo asking me to move ..well....bad mistake.

JK, i never used to complain or anything, used to go with the flow...not no more....blimey..should have heard me when i opened the bonnet and saw for the first time what they had/had not done!!air was very blue i tell yer.

From now on..pics before and after i take it to anybody!!..word of mouth works better than an advertiseing campaign!!already rung everyone i know!! :D
