The ABS warning light has just started to show on my 98 1.9tdi galaxy. do this normally indicate something exspensive or is a routine check?

It could be the sensor ring has come off a CV joint, check they are still firmly attached.

Thanks for the advice.

Usually just one of the ABS wheel sensors in the hub, but the problem is finding out which one.

If you have diagnostics, eg VAG-COM, it will tell you which sensor. You can also do a simple check by unplugging the end of each sensor wire and checking for continuity using a multimeter or a battery and small bulb. The duff sensor will be open circuit as one of mine was last month. A few years ago I had an ABS light was caused by a crack in one of the sensor rings.

A new sensor cost me
