Guest 3.5bullet Posted August 30, 2006 Report Posted August 30, 2006 i also have a tomtom 910,also have a pioneer 5700dvd head unit running pioneer avic 800 sat nav awesome bit of kit am running my 910 into the 5700 via aux box ,which plugs in to the cd changer ,then into the head unit How do you find the display on the 910? compared to my old 500 it's not as good! it doesnt seem to have as a smooth scrolling action, the screen refresh rate seems to be of a lower rate? and it has lost some features that the old hundered series had that were usefull :o the track back feature! where if you passed your destination for any reason the older units used to give a route back to the address, where as the new units dont! :o although I find it quicker at getting sat lock and a lot quicker at re routing if you miss/decide not to take the route it suggests <_< it's also not as loud as the older units! mainly due to the shape and the positioning of the speaker in the caseing so I like your idea of pipeing it through the stereo ;) I'm waiting for the release of the bluetooth car kit that due out soon that links the unit to the car stereo :D Quote
Guest gooner52 Posted August 30, 2006 Report Posted August 30, 2006 what stereo hav you got ive been using tomtom since version 1 and i think the 910 is the best yet!!!! Quote
Guest MATT Posted August 30, 2006 Report Posted August 30, 2006 Has anyone with a heated windscreen - tried their GPS with and without an external ariel? is it worth following up? Our GPS unit, half the time takes "longer than i can wait" to find a signal - yet sometimes, as soon as you switch it on, its there! Bad weather and trees sometimes cause it to go off. MATT Quote
Davetheref Posted August 30, 2006 Report Posted August 30, 2006 I think you just said it all Matt at why sometimes it goes off. I have a Mitac Mio 168 running Tom Tom 5 and never really had any problems (heated screen as well) except for tunnelsa and heavy foliage etc. I've never used the external ariel ever. Quote
NikpV Posted August 30, 2006 Report Posted August 30, 2006 Has anyone with a heated windscreen - tried their GPS with and without an external ariel? is it worth following up? we use a globalsat 338 blue tooth - have the heated screen and no antenna - its wired to the power in the central top box (no wires showing) very fast to pick up signal - usual routine is : get in, turn gps on, mount pda (tom tom already running) by the time the pda is mounted - 15secs tom tom has the location - qed Quote
Guest MATT jr Posted August 30, 2006 Report Posted August 30, 2006 Yeah - 1st thing i do when i get in the car, is get sat nav running. But sometimes, by the time im ready drive, im still waiting for signal :) MATT Quote
NikpV Posted August 30, 2006 Report Posted August 30, 2006 well the 338 is a sirf 3 chipset based gps - will get 8 sats in home or in the door pockets of the gal no problem at all Quote
dave_m Posted August 30, 2006 Report Posted August 30, 2006 I have a Nokia N70 with TomTom Mobile and a Bluetooth receiver, works great although emptys the phone battery quite quickly if car charger not connected. Prior to this I had the Navman Pin570 which I deleted the navman software and installed tomtom on it worked great but I found a few issues with it and it didn't last long Flimsy power connector on the bottom (broken very easily) If battery runs flat data is lost as there is no backup battery with my current setup My receiver even works if I put it in my pocket and is not affected at all by the heated windscreen in the Gal although the receiver is a high sensitivity one Don't think i could be without the sat nav now, although i do wish that someone would come up with "caravan friendly" sat nav so you could let it know you are towing and it will avoid narrow roads etc. Quote
Guest 3.5bullet Posted August 30, 2006 Report Posted August 30, 2006 err slightly off the beaten track! todays adventure via Tt910 :) Quote
Guest MATT jr Posted August 31, 2006 Report Posted August 31, 2006 Has anyone had that problem - where satnav thinks your on another road nearby? MJR Quote
Guest gooner52 Posted August 31, 2006 Report Posted August 31, 2006 yes loads of times biggest thing with sat nav ,should be used as a guide only lost count the mount of times ,it tries to take me down a road thats block offed or is a no entry lol  Quote
Guest MATT jr Posted August 31, 2006 Report Posted August 31, 2006 agree with using it as a guide only. twice now its crashed while on the motorway, so i have had to navigate myself until i come in at a services for a break - it also picks some stupid "short cuts" MJR Quote
teresa Posted August 31, 2006 Report Posted August 31, 2006 why not use a good old road map i never get lost Quote
Guest MATT jr Posted August 31, 2006 Report Posted August 31, 2006 because thats exciting and challenging! lol - i still do a bit of map reading - i like to make sure satnav is taking the best route. ie - on the way home, satnav wanted take us into paris ring road, i looked at a map, and found a shorter, faster more direct route to the motorway we wanted. (difference of 12 miles, and a time saving of 30mins, i know that cos some1 else on our ralley, went the paris route (he left same time as us) - that 30mins equated to us getting on a ferry as soon as we got the ports, and him having to wait 1hr 30mins! - after he got to the port, hehe) MJR:) Quote
Guest gooner52 Posted August 31, 2006 Report Posted August 31, 2006 not used a road map for around 6 years now lol  Quote
Davetheref Posted August 31, 2006 Report Posted August 31, 2006 MJR, you're right. The sat navs normally take you on either the fastest, shortest or quicket route. You have to do a lot of fine tuning to take you the 'BEST' way. I often follow the sat nav and realise after there was a quicker way but the whole idea of the gadget is to save any map reading at all and in that sense it works great. One day they will invent one thats REALLY clever and then I can get rid of the wife and her map reading. :D Quote
NikpV Posted August 31, 2006 Report Posted August 31, 2006 whilst the wifes map reading is quite reliable it ony really differs in tense sat nav : turn left in 400 yards sat nav : turn left in 100 yards wife: you should have turned left just therewife: now we are going the wrong way - I told you, should have turned left back there :D :D  What I like about sat nav is that it will recalculate if you miss a turn/turn off too soon or avoid hold ups Quote
Guest gooner52 Posted August 31, 2006 Report Posted August 31, 2006 the sole reason i bought tomtom1 years back, wifes map reading was rubbish :D  :D Quote
Guest MATT jr Posted August 31, 2006 Report Posted August 31, 2006 the best bit of navigation my mum did, when my dad was driving - we were at a big cross roads - controlled by traffic lights. mum: "follow the white car"dad: "which white car?" -- there was two, going different ways.mum: "THAT ONE!" *without pointing*dad: *guesses and gets it wrong*mum: "SEE, YOU NEVER GO WHERE I TELL YOU"dad: "this ways a short cut" *winding her up* MJR Quote
