I want to get a Sat Nav and like the look of the Tom Tom One -

Any advice please - Is this a good one is there a better one at around

I use a PDA, Mio168, which has a built in GPS reciever.

This runs TomTom which as far as I can see is the same as the dedicated TomTom units but additionally has programs such as Microsoft Excel, Word etc and can play MP3's, games etc (when you are not using it to navigate naturally). It is suposed to be able to play movies but I havent tried this yet.

I chose this as I didnt want to buy something that would ony get occasional use, this way I get the benefit of all the PDA functions & navigation in one gadget.

Price for this is a little more than your limit but it does give you more options.

I went for a PDA based SatNav option with TomTom installed. I tried a lot of different SatNav software (Garmin, Navman etc) and found TomTom to have the best maps, more add ons and upgrades and the easiest to use.

I started out with TomTom4 on a second hand PDA I got off ebay for around

IIRC you have to copy the file into the TT directory (overwriting the previous - so make a copy) and then you can select the voice required in preferences

and how do i find the required directory?im new to the pda experiance,im getting fed up listening to the woman speaking(feels like im at home) any help greatfully recieved

the difference is that the one from home uses a different tense

"you should have turned right 100 yards ago"

as opposed to

"turn right in 100 yards"

makes a difference to the amount of rubber left on tyres rather than road!!!!!

i just upgraded from a tomtom500 to a tomtom910 :) well impressed with it so far :) it does all i want/need and more, it gets sat lock a lot quicker, is less prone to telling you do a U turn if you miss your turning or decide to ignore it's chosen route! it also seems to re route quicker! comes fully loaded with world maps and speed camera's for most of europe :) i'm yet to activate the traffic feature on it till the subscribtion on the 500 runs out

so far i cant fault it :)

The above link is the sat nav pda I am getting on friday,,,,,,,,,,,, :)

Good choice - I bought one a couple of weeks ago. I got the Camera Database installed yesterday (ww.pocketgpsworld.co.uk).

Better make sure you get a screen protector. The power connector is crap - I've broken my 12v lead already, just ordered another from eBay.

If you're after OS mapping as well, GPSMap-OS is freeware and the Pin570 version is being written at the moment.

nice bit of kit, just noticed a footnote at the bottom of the page that it advises that if you have a u.v reflect windscreen then you need another bit of kit, just wonder if any one knows if my zaffy has one or not and how do you tell?

does a neighbour have a satnav, if so, try the satnav unit in the car - and if signal is poor or non existent - buy the external kit.

or cut the roof off, and go back to the old scarf and goggles!
