morticiaskeeper Posted July 3, 2006 Report Posted July 3, 2006 Sounds like the cable has jumped out of the bracket on the gearbox, then eased it's way back in over time. Sorry I can't get photos, my 2.0l would look a bit different to yours. Looking under the bonnet, look to the right, on top of the gearbox, slightly back from centre, you will see too shiny rods going left to right. These are the cables. Trace right to the ball joints. Trace left to the cable outers. The outers slot into a u shaped bracket bolted to the gearbox, make sure the outers are firmly in the slots. If they keep jumping out, an hour of swearing will let you put a cable tie around the bracket to encourage them to stay in/ Quote
morticiaskeeper Posted July 3, 2006 Report Posted July 3, 2006 Just got a photo, follow the red arrow http://www.paulcollins.f2s.com/cables.jpg Quote
Guest neil_wiles Posted July 3, 2006 Report Posted July 3, 2006 It is possible that the cable retainer has slipped up inthe bracket at the back of the engine/gearbox and during your attempts to select third has now dropped back into the slot. It has probably split the retaining clip and as such can pop out whenever it wants. The four hours is quoted as the battery and engine mount on the nearside has to be removed to "officially" refit the clamp on the cable. Quote
mumof4 Posted July 3, 2006 Author Report Posted July 3, 2006 So i have to remove loads of stuff??oh dear..will have to take pics as i go along so i know where to put everything back!! Thank you for the pic M. :D Quote
morticiaskeeper Posted July 4, 2006 Report Posted July 4, 2006 To cable tie the cables in place, I didn't remove anything. As you can see from the photo, there's also a gas kit in ther, so you will probably have more room than I did. Quote
mumof4 Posted July 4, 2006 Author Report Posted July 4, 2006 Ok, ill have a gander, if i cant find them ill post a pic. :D Quote

MO4 you must have the patience of a saint, your Galaxy is going the same way as mine...bits dropping off....the rest breaking.......I just wait for the problem of the month to arise now. Second hand car ownership shouldn't be like this should it? especially as yours is only 5 years old at least mine is 10. Hopefully I might be shot of it this weekend. Quote
Bigjeeze Posted July 5, 2006 Report Posted July 5, 2006 Changing the cables on the MK1 & Mk2 is identical - a pain in the arse but not too taxing. Probably a bit difficult for mumof4 cos she's a girlie (Only joking!!) You need to get underneath and remove the exhaust shield and you also have to take out to the two front seats - TIS, and ELSAWIn both say you need to remove the battery box etc - but I didn't when doing mine. It's tricky but perfectly do able. Good luck mum!! Quote
mumof4 Posted July 5, 2006 Author Report Posted July 5, 2006 Well, just picked the car up.drives like a dream now.Only grouch i had was that they rung up asking if i knew where the roll restrictors were as they couldnt find them!..So i trotted down with my tisc disc and flogged it to them for a tenner!!pmsl....ah the joys, got new wipers free of charge aswell thrown in.love it..i stood there and queried everything they did, they put titan summit oil in for a pd engine, drained and refilled bits....all in all it cost me 182.17(had a service aswell)(i haggled for a discount for 10 mins!!)....im going back to get the bumper fixed, front wing done,a huge dent and scratch sorted out all for the princely sum of 254 including labour and vat..i thought that was good considering i had been quoted over 1k for what i wanted doing....nowt like haggling when you got 4 kids running riot soaked to the skin and screaming!!..sure they couldnt get rid of me quick enough.. Oh..the work i had done today should have cost me nearly 400 quid..think i got a good deal today with the promise that i would go back!!(which i will) good end to a crappy day i thought! Thats what that thing is in the middle????..Ah well, garage is sorting it out now as it snapped last night.got towed home.I was most unimpressed.
