Does anyone know whether a MK1 alhambra 1.9 TD W-reg should be fitted with reinforced tyres. I ask because my neighbours car hasn't, and my almost identical 2003 MK2 has - surely mine isn't significantly heavier - could this be main dealer incompetance??

I ask, because my car, which passed it's MOT at a major tyre retailer 50 miles ago was declared as having illegal tyes today - yes they were ******* off at me taking it for an MOT elsewhere. I asked them to get me a price on a pair of Contis and they came back with a very competive quote, adding that my Eco Contact CP's had been replaced by Premium Contact 2's. Not trusting the dealer I contacted Continental who said that this was incorrect - both tyres were in manufacture and the Premium ones WERE NOT REINFORCED and should NOT be used on the Alhambra. When I contacted the dealer they admitted they were wrong - I wonder how many other people are driving around with the wrong (illegal) tyres?

I've had 3 Gals, 2 Mk1's and a Mk2 and they have all had to have reinforced tyres. I would imagine that the Alhambra would need the same. :D Andy.

Have to agree with the rest.

We just bought our first Galaxy and had to replace 2 tyres (

As I understand it, ALL MPVs, including Picassos and the like, must have reinforced tyres.

As to which and prices, When I bought my old much abused S reg TDI a year ago I had to buy a couple for the front. On went the cheapest branded tyres, Avons @

Does the acronym MPV have any legal status? I have seen the Ford Focus advertised as an MPV!

....... but I do believe that reinforced tyres give greater stability and extended life on this type of vehicle.

And MAY also be a legal requirement given the load rating of the vehicle. I think that is the basis of some of the previous debates on this.

The important thing to check is the Load index of the tyre.

For the Galaxy, they must be rated 95 or higher, 93 rated should be a MOT fail.

This means that most sizes have to be reinforced to achieve this rating. There is only one exception as far as I know, there are some 215/60x15 tyres fitted to Galaxys which are already 95 rated on the standard tyre, so they do not have to be reinforced or 'extra load'.

You have to take care, however, as only a few of the non-reinforced 215/60/x15 tyres are 95 rated. There are quite a few 94 rated, but Ford spec seems to be 95 rated or higher.

All other sizes must be reinforced or 'extra-load' on the Galaxy.

Hope this helps :P

The pair of Fortuna 215/55x16 97W XL I've just fitted seem absolutely fine so far,

There will be quite a difference fully laden as it's a seven seater, the tyres are rated for this gross weight.

What matters is the load index - the tyres must be 95 rated or higher regardless of size. I suspect you will be unable to buy tyres, in the sizes quoted, rated high enough Li for the Galaxy.

If you need tyres, i've recently fitted Falken ZE 512 215/55/16 to all 4 corners of my shazza, and @ 60 quid each (without fitting) they seem like a bargain.

I've done a few thousand miles on them now, and i dont notice any difference from the dunlop 2020 sports that i had on the car before. they do have rim protection, so they are great for when the wife uses the car!

Link takes you to www.mytyres.co.uk - I can also add my recommendation, they are an excellent supplier in my experience. :(

The Fortunas are going well so far, no problems whatsoever that I can see, and quieter than the noisy Dunlops... :)

Very happy for

With people on board or in our case, my other half (Pregnant 7 months) and our son whose 8 years.

You have to ask yourself

What price is safety? :(

Agree entirely and if you are anything like me you often have other peoples kids on board too. More responsibility than ever IMHO.

If the website picture is accurate, they're directional.

The Fortunas I had from mytyres last week are assymetrical - non-directional, but must be mounted with the wall marked 'OUTSIDE' to the outer rim, unlike the Dunlops which are symmetrical - which can be mounted either way.
