Just started hearing this morning a tapping sound when accelerating, and can only just hear on engine idle

When idle and engine revved no change but when in gear and accelerated louder tapping sound.

Out of warranty now so

If it's engine load dependent, it won't be tappets - these tap regardless of engine load. Worn hydraulic tappets may tend to tap less at higher revs due to the higher oil pressure.

What do u mean by engine load dependent ?

Sorry for the daft question but I don't know a great deal about engines

Engine Load=I think it means how much pressure the engine is under..i.e....speed, revs, weight in car etc..

(but dont quote me on it  )

A long shot, but the auxiliary drivebelt tensioner is sometimes a problem on higher milage 2.3s, however I wouldn't expect it to cause a tapping noise. Another possibility would be the timing chain tensioner, although I don't recall anyone on here having one fail.

Engine under load means that it's being used to move or accelerate the car. No load is when the engine is revved in neutral or idling. A noisy tappet will tick away all the time the engine is running, whether the engine is doing work or not.
