dfh101 Posted February 22, 2004 Report Posted February 22, 2004 In the last 2 days my Sharan(2000 115pd) has started the aircraft noise and is expelling excessive amounts of white smoke, this is the first time this has happened and it does not seem right. We were stopped by the police today who think the vehicle has an emissions problem and did not seem interested in that its just the way these are. I am with you Jeff, does anyone know how to disable this either by fuse pulling or is if possible via a vagcom. Many thanks dfh4np  Quote
Guest Porker Posted March 9, 2004 Report Posted March 9, 2004 My Alhambra TDi also belches white smoke in the morning gassing other motorists and pedestrians. The amount is totally unacceptable. i.e. loads. It then clears. It has only just started doing it (last 2 days) and only in the morning. Before this I'm not sure the unit worked at all. Not especially cold weather. I will consult my TIS CD tonight to see if it can be disabled as it's a real pain. Will post if I find anything useful Quote
italiastar Posted March 9, 2004 Report Posted March 9, 2004 Reading through this has explained why my car has started to sound like Concord on start-up - Quite impressive really!, but should it tick or not - that is the question? It seems that Ford have a fix for it, but SEAT haven't - as I can't even get SEAT to acknowledge my mudflap issue (see separate post), what chance have I got with this???? Quote
gazza007 Posted March 10, 2004 Report Posted March 10, 2004 I get a little smoke to start but nothing excessive. I wonder if it had anything to do with the brand of Diesel that you use. Quote
rwtomkins Posted March 11, 2004 Report Posted March 11, 2004 the consensus from many previous threads has always been that the ticking is perfectly ok and only a problem if you find it annoying, in which case ford can offer a fix. i get a bit of white smoke but certainly nothing alarming. interesting theory about the brand of diesel: maybe those suffering from the billowing clouds could try switching brands and tell us Quote
gazza007 Posted March 12, 2004 Report Posted March 12, 2004 After all this recent talk has made me realise that mine hasn't been kicking in.It has been cold enough, has always been quite reliable in the past.Anything I can have a look at to check out. Fuses etc? Quote
Ivor_E_Tower Posted March 12, 2004 Report Posted March 12, 2004 ...and mine seems to be doing the opposite. When stopped at traffic lights towards the end of a 45 mile journey the other day, with temp gauge in "normal" position, I heard th ticking sound and realised that the aux heater was running. Why??? Quote
grifjl Posted March 12, 2004 Report Posted March 12, 2004 Ivor - may have been really cold. The pipes running under the car are exposed and the coolant would cool on its way to the aux heater. Result is temp of coolant dips below 75 on its way back. Someone mentioned lagging the pipes, with that grey insulation pipe stuff. I have done this and find that the car heats up a lot quicker and aux heater is usually only on for around 5 mins. Reduced loss of heat on underside of vehicle!! Quote
Jeff115 Posted March 12, 2004 Author Report Posted March 12, 2004 Pipped at the 'post' literally by you, grifjl  I was just about to post that if both parameter have been exceeded i.e. outside temp < 5 degrees and coolant temp. < 85 degrees for the booster heater to switch on, then your booster heater may have kicked in again, Ivor. Assuming that the outside temp. was still < 5 degrees then the only variable was the coolant temp. which again went temporarily < 85 degrees? I find that sometimes when I switch on the Auxillary heater the booster heater also then kicks in again (must affect the coolant temp.) However after all that I also find myself in a similar status to gazza007 - I haven't noticed it at all recently. I feel a call to 'oh expensive one' coming on... Later,J. Quote
Guest nimrod Posted March 12, 2004 Report Posted March 12, 2004 this guy has a fairly good explantion of how and where every thing is that operates the aux heater http://www.pantoulier.de/Galaxy/index.html you will how ever need to read german or use http://babelfish.altavista.com/translate.dyn Quote
Ivor_E_Tower Posted March 12, 2004 Report Posted March 12, 2004 Thanks guys, yes it was really cold (about 2 deg C) outside at the time, and it is possible that the temp in the return pipes had cooled down from the high-speed run that preceeded the stop at traffic lights. I'll have to look at lagging those pipes..... Quote
gazza007 Posted March 12, 2004 Report Posted March 12, 2004 Drove to work about an hour ago, only 4 degs. Turned radio off to listen for kick-in.No luck. I'll mention it at next service, although it may be too warm to test.Saying that it will probably work as it warms up over the next few days Quote
Guest JnevilleA Posted April 8, 2004 Report Posted April 8, 2004 Forget the noise -what about the smoke/steam? Dozing peacefully I was awakened by by my family to tell me the Galaxy was on fire :o I ran out and sure enough I couldn't see the thing for smoke. Seems the booster heater is on all the time and the effects are dramatic to say the least. Left it with my local garage (quite a crowd gather to see the vehicle emerge from the vapour) who are sratching their head with no ideas. This thread suggests a fuse to turn it off -at least that would be a start! Whats wrong with it and how can it be fixed? It would be nce to be mobile for the Easter hols.... Quote
Dave-G Posted April 8, 2004 Report Posted April 8, 2004 :o you're not s'possed to fry easter eggs with it ...SILLY  Quote
Guest JnevilleA Posted April 11, 2004 Report Posted April 11, 2004 Thanks - very constructive. Pulled out a 25 amp fuse and all is well. Exchanging on Wednesday for new Mazda MPV. Bye bye Galaxy and trouble galore. :( Quote
Guest fixmyford Posted April 11, 2004 Report Posted April 11, 2004 On the aux heater subject, until recently if the unit failed (clouds of black smoke from under vehicle) the only option was to replace the complete unit.Ford now has an improved ignitor available. It involves stripping the unit and replacing the ignition device (glowplug). This is a much cheaper option and fixes nearly all of the failures (there have been many). www.fixmyford.co.uk Quote
