Guest steven.tunnicliffe@lineone.net Posted October 4, 2003 Report Posted October 4, 2003 Cheers Jim. Aye, I've done 40 miles and it still hasn't dropped, so it looks like I haven't disturbed it filling it up again. I forgot to mention she's a Zetec, like the last one I had. You're right about the sensors. The last Galaxy I had I gave up reversing into parking spaces, it was hopeless, especially after the first two weeks where I went up the garden wall!! I just used to drive in fwds. I'll look for your pickies and the site just now. Cheers Jim. PS The aux heater started off this morning. Quote
Guest steven.tunnicliffe@lineone.net Posted October 4, 2003 Report Posted October 4, 2003 Thanks fredt. Quote
Jeff115 Posted October 4, 2003 Author Report Posted October 4, 2003 Hi folks,Thanks a lot for the info. regarding the Aux. Heater. Must check it out further except that it has not kicked in over the last few days - is'nt this weather marvellous, for October? Later,J. Quote
Guest JIMSTDI Posted October 4, 2003 Report Posted October 4, 2003 hi jeff yes m8 the weather has been ver nice B) i went out in my gal tonite for a change it was blo ody nice to  all the best james Quote
Jeff115 Posted October 4, 2003 Author Report Posted October 4, 2003 Hi James, We're just back from a short break in the 'sunny south east' (of Ireland) and neither the weather nor the Galaxy disappointed... The sweet little 115 tdi is great for tacking along @ 60-70 mph with loads in reserve when the need (or the inkling) for more arises. I recently took two U.S. colleagues on a business trip to Belfast - they would not believe that the Gal. only had a 1900cc engine  Sure why would you bother with a petrol? Later,J. Quote
Guest JIMSTDI Posted October 4, 2003 Report Posted October 4, 2003 your right j i could not belive the power in the old gal for a 1.9did enjoy the drive last night was very nice all the best james Quote
Guest ANDY FITZGERALD Posted October 5, 2003 Report Posted October 5, 2003  HAD MY AUX HEATER CUT IN ON SATURDAY NIGHT, 4 DEGREES REGISTERED OUTSIDE TEMPERATURE... IN BIRMINGHAM, ITS GETTING PRETTY NIPPY LATER ON... TIME TO GET THE THERMALS OUT SOON, I RECKON... Quote
Ivor_E_Tower Posted October 5, 2003 Report Posted October 5, 2003 Quite bizarely, my aux heater cut in this afternoon (ambient air temp on display was 12 deg C) on way to garden centre. Didn't cut in for return journey. Very odd... Quote
Jeff115 Posted October 6, 2003 Author Report Posted October 6, 2003 Yes, the aux. heater on my gal. has cut in during the afternoons too when temp. was easily 12-15 degrees. However the car was parked in the shade - where's the outside temperature sensor? RW - from your previous post... "I'd be very interested to know if you don't get the clicking noise, because that might imply Ford's found a way to stifle it" I have not heard this clicking noise at all...however Steven seems to be getting it on his now Zetec diesel? Later,J. Quote
Guest JIMSTDI Posted October 6, 2003 Report Posted October 6, 2003 not sure on the galaxy but on older fords bottom frame, below the front bumperjust cliped into place in to the frame.... my heater came on yesterday also gal was in the garage temp was about 11.5c james Quote
Ivor_E_Tower Posted October 6, 2003 Report Posted October 6, 2003 Maybe it has something to do with the water/coolant temperature rather than the ambient temp? Quote
Guest steven.tunnicliffe@lineone.net Posted October 17, 2003 Report Posted October 17, 2003 Thanks fredt, I'll give them a go. I had a look at some of the lighting available in Motorworld the other day...I must say I'm a bit tempted, however a duster and chamois leather will do for now! Is the picture you've got on your posts your Gal? Have you got any bigger ones to post? It almost looks like an open top one from the picture I can see B) Quote
rwtomkins Posted October 21, 2003 Report Posted October 21, 2003 Hi Jeff115, it's very strange you're not getting the tick tick tick noise from the aux heater fuel pump. Anyone else with a new diesel galaxy not getting it? All I can say is lucky you. Though if I remember right from last winter, if you stop and switch off the Gal for a while, then fire her up again, the ticking is often a lot quieter than before. Quote
Jeff115 Posted October 21, 2003 Author Report Posted October 21, 2003 Hi RW,No - definitely no clicking noises from the aux heater fuel pump. The heater is firing up regularly now. Let me see if I have the workings of this unit right - essentially because the PD engine runs quite cool then when the ambient temperature is less than 5 degrees (10 per manual?) and the coolant temp is less than 75 degrees the aux heater fires up to heat the coolant. Coolant is pumped by a seperate water pump to the aux heater and back (to the heater matrix?) so that the cab can get warm air through the blowers. An aux fuel pump (suspect clicking noise source) sucks diesel from a seperate feed off the tank into a combustion chamber which is fired by a glow plug? Exhaust gases (Esso blue smell) are emitted by seperate exhaust. So what's the turbine noise anyone? :D Apart from my misgivings the unit actually seems to work well - definitely a lot cosier first thing a.m. than my previous Passat and a lot more than previous Vauxhall Cavalier!!! Later,J. Quote
Fordy Posted October 22, 2003 Report Posted October 22, 2003 Hi folks, My latest 115ps Galaxy (5 weeks old) doesn't seem to tick when the booster heater comes on. Previous 115ps Galaxy registered December 2000 did tick, although this did not annoy me! Page 76 of the latest handbook explains all and says temperatures of outside 10C and coolant 75C before booster activates. My one came on at 12C the other morning but I guess that the temperature of the coolant was below 75C, so I reckon that there could be a missprint and instead of 10C AND 75C they mean 10C AND/OR 75C. With regard to the noise being annoying, if the diesel was a noisy engine like some, we wouldn't hear it, I expect someone in a Rolls Royce complains about the clock ticking too loud. Just drive the Galaxy and enjoy it, it's a great car - I've owned three now, one petrol 2.3 and two diesel 115 ps'.I am certainly glad that the booster heater is there, not only for quick heater warmup, but for general engine heating which reduces wear. The other alternative is to fit a heater into the coolant hose as supplied by Kenlowe which is an excellent product, but these are only useful when at home, not when you return to the car in a carpark on a freezing night.Regards, Fordy. Guest elj Posted October 29, 2003 Report Posted October 29, 2003 If you do not have a tcking noise so lucky you, but if you have you just cannot ignore it as it is very obvious and annoying. Mine is 2002 deisel 115bhp and apart from the ticking I am very happy with the car. I've been back to my dealer several time and they aparently changed the pump but that never solved the problem. I was then told that Ford is working on a fix which should be ready in a few months. That was in April. Last week I was told that this is not the case. No fix, you just have to put up with it. Well, I'm not. I will contact contact ford directly and request that they do something about it. I will laso contact Watchdog and see if that would encourage them to fix the problem. After all we pay a lot of money for these cars and I do not see why e should just accept it. I certainly would not have bought the car if I'd known about this problem. Quote
HJT Posted October 29, 2003 Report Posted October 29, 2003 The ticking doesn't bother me either, I can think of worse things that need to be addressed by Ford/VW. The bad design/weakness of the aircon system, the consistent failure of MAF sensors and the general poor performance of the Ford dealers. Howard Quote
rwtomkins Posted October 30, 2003 Report Posted October 30, 2003 Well noise is a very subjective thing so we can't expect everyone to be equally annoyed or even annoyed at all. I'm one who does find it a bit annoying - it seems a bit daft for Ford to go to all the trouble of making a quiet car and then allow the clicking to spoil it. Anyway, it sounds from what Fordy and Jeff115 say that Ford have found a fix, so the only question is, will they retrofit? I'll be interested to hear how you get on, elj. By the way, Howard, I entirely agree with you, they should damn well fix the more serious things! But that doesn't mean they can't fix the little things, too! Quote
HJT Posted October 30, 2003 Report Posted October 30, 2003 Mind you I quite like the turbine noise as it spins down after you shut down the engine, the number of people that have asked me what the noise is and I tell them with a completely straight face that the Galaxy is powered by a small jet engine and it's that shutting down they can hear. You can see some people thinking "is he serious?", some people thinking "yeah right" and others who are really impressed and are going off to tell their mates  :D :D Howard Quote
Guest Turbo Posted October 30, 2003 Report Posted October 30, 2003 Think yourselves lucky - we`ve had it down at -3c in Carlisle and the ice alert symbol stayed on `til 11am last Saturday, then we hit 5c......and I havn`t got an aux heater !! Turbo Quote
Guest elj Posted October 31, 2003 Report Posted October 31, 2003 The problem is not whether the noise is annoying or not, fact is it shouldn't be there. We are not talking about engine noise, heater, fan etc, this is noise that is not part of the expected 'noises' that come with mechanical parts. The fact that some have it and some don't indicate that there is either a problem with manufacturing or fitting. Either case it is Ford's obligation to fix it. Quote
Tim Lucas Posted November 6, 2003 Report Posted November 6, 2003 If anyone finds a solution to this ticking sound when the auxiliary heater kicks in I would really appreciate knowing about it. This noise is the only gripe have have with an otherwise beautiful car! Thanks Quote
smon Posted December 10, 2003 Report Posted December 10, 2003 I have a 99 110 Tdi. Despite the recent freezing weather, I neither hear the ticking nor the turbine noise. Does this mean that the booster/aux heater isnt working, or was it only fitted to the later models? Simon Quote
Guest daddycool Posted December 10, 2003 Report Posted December 10, 2003 On my Gal, when it is cold an electrical whirring noise can be heard starting up after the engine is started. It seems to come from the engine and when the car is stopped it runs down after the engine is switched off.Is this the same thing? Also where can i find out the original spec for my car, ie did it come with alloys or cd changer? Im guessing i've got to go and see the useless idoits at fraud. Quote
