Masked Marauder Posted June 15, 2006 Author Report Posted June 15, 2006 OK, your PC has two types of memory, Physical Memory that is very fast to access (RAM) you have 256Mb of that. It also has "Virtual Memory" When the RAM is full the PC uses space on the Hard Drive as pseudo RAM which is very slow to access. This is the Page File. So if your page file is bigger than your RAM then the hard drive is being used more than the RAM. And to do this the PC has to take the information in RAM it is not doing anything with and write it to the hard disk to make room for data it does need to do something with, then recover what it wants to use from the page file in the hard disk and then put it into RAM to use it. Took a while to write this all or you and took you a bit to read it? Well if you had another 512Mb of RAM you would have saved all the time and everything would have been so much quicker, well the same goes for your PC, if it is all in RAM then all that slow reading and writing is not needed! mumof4 Posted June 15, 2006 Report Posted June 15, 2006 available just dropped to 34496. and i wasnt doing anything! but what do the numbers mean??im thick on this i know,i still dont understand...sorry. ;) everything seems to be working ok. Quote
Masked Marauder Posted June 15, 2006 Author Report Posted June 15, 2006 P.S. A large number of BSOD OS failures are due to errors in reading or writing the Page File. The less reading and writing, the less chance of the failure..... Quote
Masked Marauder Posted June 15, 2006 Author Report Posted June 15, 2006 available just dropped to 34496. and i wasnt doing anything! but what do the numbers mean??im thick on this i know,i still dont understand...sorry. ;) everything seems to be working ok. They will fluctuate as the Operating System does what it has to to maintain the system, but all that data handling takes up processor cycles! And everything may seem to be working OK, but another 512Mb of SDRAM will cost a little but be worth every penny, everything will run faster. Look at it like this, Your RAM is like your bath at home. How much quicker would it be if you could bath all the kids at once instead of one at a time? Well with a bigger bath you can! Quote
mumof4 Posted June 15, 2006 Report Posted June 15, 2006 im sorry but you have completely lost me.i browse and surf come o here and use msm..that is all i do.and all i really know.i can do system restore.recovery, can attach to an email..that is about it. Quote

mumof4 Posted June 15, 2006 Report Posted June 15, 2006 Well if as long as your happy and the PC is quick enough and not slowing to a crawl or crashing then don't worry about fixing what is not broken! but you asked for numbers.....i have given them and i still dont know what they mean???im worried now as the available one keeps getting lower!!i wasnt worried before, but i am now. ;) Quote
mumble_bee Posted June 15, 2006 Report Posted June 15, 2006 just upgrade your ram before we report you ! Quote
mumof4 Posted June 15, 2006 Report Posted June 15, 2006 i give up..no has explained to me what the numbers mean...........no good telling me to get ram when i dont even know why i need it.im going to leave it.as mm said..dont fix what aint broken..if i have to i will do a complete system recovery to get things back to normal if they go hay wire again. ;) Quote
NikpV Posted June 15, 2006 Report Posted June 15, 2006 ok try an analogy you are in your kitchen and you have to prepare a meals, you have cupboards where you have foo, pots, pans, spoons, knives etc (this is your long term storage - your disk drives) you also have your work surface (this is your memory). As you start preparing you take things out of the cupboards and put them on the work surface, you cant always finish each job and put things away so as you prepare the meal your work surface gets more and more clutterered. Now the computer can do some clever things - it takes some of your cupboard space and reserves it - you cant use it. If your work surface is full and you need another pan (making a nice roue sauce) you take the pan out and the computer puts some of the clutter into its reserved cupboard ( keeping a mental note of where it goes) freeing up some work surface for you to use. If you need the stuff its 'put away in its reserve' it needs to put something else in there to free up more work surface. The bigger your work surface is the more jobs you can do before having to put some stuff away in the reserve cupboard. Depending on your operating system the computer will need to use some of your 'work surface' to keep track of whats going on. As you close programs down they are removed - like putting the clutter away in their proper cupboards - freeing up work surface. Hope this helps - remember its only an analogy Quote
mumof4 Posted June 15, 2006 Report Posted June 15, 2006 thanks nik..i understand it all now!!..good way to put it.ruddy brilliant.going to print that one off to pin up on the wall. ;) so that would be why my virtual memory would get to low..not enough cupboard space so it ,in a way used the one next to it aswell. Quote
NikpV Posted June 15, 2006 Report Posted June 15, 2006 the last blue screen message you got was basically the computer telling you it couldn't get the stuff out of the cupboard and put it in the correct place on the worksurface - it got confused somehow maybe the stuff in the cupboard was too mixed up or the bit where it was keeping tabs got mixed up ;) :D Quote
Masked Marauder Posted June 15, 2006 Author Report Posted June 15, 2006 This time last week I had a 512Mb SDRAM that was sitting getting dusty in a box, but I sold to someone for Quote

Masked Marauder Posted June 15, 2006 Author Report Posted June 15, 2006 must be something like this then :16: :P you probably have one of these and a spare slot near it to put another SIMMs? Or do you mean the DIMM slots behind? Quote
NikpV Posted June 15, 2006 Report Posted June 15, 2006 I assume they will be the dimms but don't know anything about mo4s machine but the shape is what I'm trying to convey atm - see what she can find :P Quote

Masked Marauder Posted June 15, 2006 Author Report Posted June 15, 2006 They are card slots (PCI slots) not memory slots. Look behind the ribbon cbles to the right of there. Quote
