Davetheref Posted June 14, 2006 Report Posted June 14, 2006 I'm going the whole hog and am about to try Vista. Microsoft are now doing free downloads of the beta version.Only recommendation, do not use it on your main machine if poss as it is beta and there could be driver issues.. Quote
Guest Cepheus Posted June 14, 2006 Report Posted June 14, 2006 Or you could just download the Vista lookalike patch for Xp sp2 .... all the fun of Vista without the compatibility issues!! http://bricomix.free.fr/packs/Pack_Vista_Inspirat_1.1.exe (26.6 Mb) Virus and spyware/adware free, I'm running it on my PC at home with no adverse effect. And it looks and works like the badger's nadgers <_<  http://crystalxp.zerackiel.net/_resources/vista8s.jpghttp://crystalxp.zerackiel.net/_resources/vista1s.jpghttp://crystalxp.zerackiel.net/_resources/vista2s.jpghttp://crystalxp.zerackiel.net/_resources/vista5s.jpg Quote
widu13 Posted June 14, 2006 Report Posted June 14, 2006 The skin just crashed my system...twice  Quote
mumble_bee Posted June 14, 2006 Report Posted June 14, 2006 lol I started the download and then read widu's post and cancelled it PHEAR THE CRASH Quote
Guest Cepheus Posted June 14, 2006 Report Posted June 14, 2006 The skin just crashed my system...twice  A bad workman blames his tools lol just kidding Mine installed fine with no problems but it is quite a high spec pc. (2.8 ghz pentium 4 with 1gb ram) Sorry it didn't work for you, guess you'll have to miss out! ;) Quote
Masked Marauder Posted June 14, 2006 Author Report Posted June 14, 2006 I have been Beta testing Vista for a while. It is relatively stable but there are (not surprisingly) some driver issues. To most though the difference will just be eye candy. Quote

To most though the difference will just be eye candy. I remember upgrading from NT4 to win2k on our network in work ...... that was a fun 72 hours without sleep thanks to the worst test phase ever that didn't catch around 30 incompatibility issues with some of the machines!! I can imagine the Vista beta being quite a similar experience as it's another Micro$oft quality product! Quote
mumble_bee Posted June 15, 2006 Report Posted June 15, 2006 it is quite a high spec pc. (2.8 ghz pentium 4 with 1gb ram)Â Â ok that wasnt even a high spec 4 years ago  Quote
Masked Marauder Posted June 15, 2006 Author Report Posted June 15, 2006 it is quite a high spec pc. (2.8 ghz pentium 4 with 1gb ram)Â Â ok that wasnt even a high spec 4 years ago :unsure:Â Â I think you will find that that was above top spec for a home user 4 years ago. The P4 2.8GHz was not released until the start of Q4 in 2002, mainstream channels were not supplied with them until early December 2002. And 512Mb of RAM was considered standard then. Quote
NikpV Posted June 15, 2006 Report Posted June 15, 2006 it is quite a high spec pc. (2.8 ghz pentium 4 with 1gb ram)Â Â ok that wasnt even a high spec 4 years ago :DÂ Â I wish my laptop's had that spec - I'm not allowed my desktop in the lounge anymore - It doesn't match the decor :D  ;) :o Quote
mumble_bee Posted June 15, 2006 Report Posted June 15, 2006 ul Nik ;)Â Marauder, I bow to your superior knowledge of computing history, and adjust my comment to "That wasnt even a high spec 3 years ago". I hope this is more pleasing to your ego ? Quote
mumof4 Posted June 15, 2006 Report Posted June 15, 2006 well..think mine must be useless then as mine is a few yrs old now and has 256mb ram,40gb hard drive, 1.8 gHz.does me ok.not that i do much with it! ;) :D Quote
NikpV Posted June 15, 2006 Report Posted June 15, 2006 you could probably do with increasing the memory to 512Mb since you always have so many windows/ threads/processes going on at the same time Quote
mumble_bee Posted June 15, 2006 Report Posted June 15, 2006 would have to agree with nik, tbh with 1gb on ddr being around about 50 squid, it should be considered criminal to have less than that. Quote
mumof4 Posted June 15, 2006 Report Posted June 15, 2006 But why should i increase memory when it seems to be running ok????i dont use hardly any of the numerous programms that came on it.... Quote
NikpV Posted June 15, 2006 Report Posted June 15, 2006 But why should i increase memory when it seems to be running ok????i dont use hardly any of the numerous programms that came on it....  you were getting blue screens with references to resources (whether you know it or not) - memory helps all those chat windows, ebay windows, live chat windows ford site etc stay open with less pageing (caused you last blue screen). You might only use a few programs but its the number of threads you open - it can multitask but ......... needs memory to do it   would have to agree with nik, choke choke splutter, now now take a deeeeeepp breath ;) :D :D :P :D :D :D ;) ;) Quote
mumof4 Posted June 15, 2006 Report Posted June 15, 2006 But its already got memory!!!i delete things i no longer need..that creates space..i have loads of free space on my drives!!..my c drive is only one third full.....my D drive(recovery drive) is one quarter empty.  Surely that is fine?? Quote

Masked Marauder Posted June 15, 2006 Author Report Posted June 15, 2006 OK, press the left Ctrl, left Alt and the Del key all at the same time. You should get a box pop open, click on the "Performance" tab. Where it says "Physical Memory (K)" what figure does it say is available? Where it says "PF Usage" what figure is there? Quote
mumof4 Posted June 15, 2006 Report Posted June 15, 2006 ermm..the number keeps changing!!!!between 54170 and 55600...(never seen this box b4!!)Â pf usage is 340mb.got 2 applications running, here and my tiscali inbox. Quote
mumble_bee Posted June 15, 2006 Report Posted June 15, 2006 mo4 you have to press them all at the SAME TIME !!! or the pc will self destruct Quote
