They don't look after my car but the local SEAT dealership is supposed to be pretty good so I decided to get their view on what I think is a leaking evaporator. To start with I have to say that I don't KNOW that is the problem, but it is looking that way!! If interested look at other posts from me for the full resume of the problem.

In turns out that the story I got from the dealership was the same as that told to my mate who knows the service manager, and I do believe what he say's.

1) Removing the evaporator from the Mark 2 is a pig of a job. Removing the dash is only part of it, then to remove the evaporator from the heater takes another two hours. Then you have to put it all back, recalibrate the flaps etc. They reckon that in all it takes a day and a half!!

2) In all his time at the dealership (a number of years) he has only had to replace two faulty evaporators! Its is more likely to be the condenser. The SEAT price for the condenser alone is

There is a brand new product on the market that indis are going to be using that will seal BIG holes in aircon systems. It goes into the system, they run the system with it and a bit of gas in and it foams as it comes out the hole and sets rock solid. They then have to flush the system and refill.

It may be an option for failed evaporators....

I still havent fixed my a/c after the dealers slowly killed it during year 2/3 of its warranty. ("yes we've definitley fixed it this time....." :P ) and SEAT refused point blank after the clock rolled on at midnight of year 3. :P ;)

The final analysis from the dealer after countless refills of uv dye was...

"were not really sure but it looks as if your evaporator is leaking. Yes we've change quite a few evaporators, its a common problem. And the compressor's got a slight leak too. Where? At the joint near the centre of the body. How much to change the evaporator? About

"So, you want to try what is probably one of the least reliable cars that money can buy...... well, I suppose that's one way of making your present car seem reliable!"

Where do you get you information from? I am aware of a few 'bad ones' but in general I understood it was ok.

SeatKid:

Though we are having subtly different experiences what you say compounds everything that I have learnt in recent weeks.

SEAT dealer quoted a day and half plus

I have dye in my system since last September and there are no stains left anywhere. I lost virtually all my gas, it has been refilled, pressure tested with no loss and has been working for three weeks. It will probably fail again as soon as I go on holiday.

this sniffer is it like the ones corgi plumbers use to search for a gas leak?coz if it is you can belch and fart  and it will set these things off,so i wouldnt trust it too much.

Make what you like of this but a contact within SEAT reckons that in their experience aircon leaks that cannot be traced are more likely to be condenser than evaporator!!

Regards.

Oggy.

That makes sense, because evaporator the cabin would fill with gas and you could sniff it out, with the condenser the fans will just blow it away!

got my air con up and running again after three days with a indipendant wouldnt hold gas found leak on condensor replaced with new one

unlikely that it is the same unless thiongs have changed - the sensor in the natural gas detectors used to be a gauze which let the gas through which then ignited, ionised the air and the current detected, like a davy lamp the ignited gas cooled and couldn't ignite the gas outside of the gauze. air con gas is non-flammable AFAIK.

Ps methane emitted by farts would be detected

umm TIS says that solvents may affect the sniffer (halo-alkane leak detector)

Odors from other chemicals such as antifreeze, diesel fuel, disc brake cleaner, or other cleaning solvents

may affect the detector

At the time the Picasso fourum was the only place to host photos. I've not tried to post a photo recently, can they be hosted here now?

Yes works fine here now - you can add several pictures per post and position them to suit the text

Was your your condenser and regas repair satisfactory. Do you feel able to recommend your Brum sepecialist air con shop ? Did they diagnose the original problem or did you prescribe the repair ?

Regards

Yes the repair was satisfactory and they were very helpful , the only thing i am not sure about is why the cc panel still flashes, i am getting differnt views on it so am a bit confused on that one but the unit is blowing cold and at the end of the day that's what matters :) give them a bell and just mention the site as i told them i would be letting people know about it, they diagnosed the problem and very quick it was about 10/15 mins
