hiya.

driving galaxy today, glanced at the engine temp - and it was dot on 90C -- i think parked up - and engine still running - waiting for dad - i noticed the engine temp went down 1 notch - then after about 3 secs - went back up to 90C then back down a notch etc --- did it a few times then stopped.

dad says it might be the thermostat opening and closing - but i have not noticed it before.

any ideas?

Don't you believe your Dad then?

I think he's right. Of course if you're worried - Don't look at the gauge - find something better to do

More like the fans going on and off...... But then you msot likely had the air-con on so the fans would be on anyway. Are they 2 speed?

if the cc was on auto then the fans would be cutting in and out as per the cc operation demands and as you suggest they would cause the drop in engine temp, the rapid fluctuations in temp would more likely be the fans controlling the temp and not the rapid operation of the stat

if it was the fan then surely it would be a slow decrease then increase then slow decrease as it cooled??

we haven't got climate control - but yes the Aircon was on - on setting 2 out of a maximum of 4.

also keen to add the aircon is actually working which is a blessing!

on setting 2 out of a maximum of 4....? surely thats the fan speed and not the temperature setting?

it was doing it again yesterday, except it was fluctuating two notches (20C).

slightly amusing, you have your engine temp needle going up and down, and then your fuel needle going from empty to 1/3 full, fuel lights keep binging, the autobox gave the mother of all jerks! we thought someone had just run in the back of us it was that bad - even my mum couldnt jerk a car like that.

its a crap car when it wants to be, but also a good one - ie, we used it for a car boot sale the other day, and the galaxy could do the job best compared to other cars.

That must be a hefty momentary current drain as the fans kick in. Check they are not siezing up. I think they could be two stage fans too, this would suggest a resistor failure meaning they don't work on the lower speed so suddenly going from standing to full load.

Did you not have the CC on? The fans should have been running then.

I just know there ia an obvious answer and I'll feel a prat when it is answered :D but why do the cooling fans come on when automatically when the AC is activated. The only reason I can think of is the extra load placed on the engine heats the water up more.

i will try to explain what was running...

we dont have climate control. its the old dials, the temp one set to coolest, AirCon ON, fan speed 3 out of 4 - and thats with NO recirc, set on the front vents.

engine was running, and all other electrical accessories were switched off (such as radio, lights etc)

thanks for the help, as this doesnt seem normal.

and were driving spain in 30 or so days!
