good morning

 

My son is trying to fit a after market remote locking unit

 

most of it had be wired up nows hes abit stuck

 

as he needs a + 15 positive source

 

Any ideas would be very greatful

Is it an "always on" source or just when the engine is running?

OK, well he has several options, but they are all going to be +12v, although a fully charged battery is actually 13.2v and when charging is 15v, we say 12v as a nominal figure.

 

He can take the supply from the battery positive terminal, the battery feed to the back of the fuse box, or as long as he is not going to be drawing too much drain from a always on accessory like the cigarette lighter. My personal preference would depend on the location but would be either a direct feed from the battery or the feed to the fuse box. In both cases an in-line fuse should be fitted in the wire to the remote locking device.

power draw at 12 vdc is 5 mA taken from the instuctions

5mA is absolutly nothing. You can safely wire that low a draw into the positive supply to the cigarette lighter.

 

Have you any idea what function the wire controls because that low a current is normally a signal wire. So so say if for eample if it has auto-lock when the engine is started and auto-unlock when it is stopped then that would explain why +15v as it would be supplied from the alternator which provides 15V when running.

 

Can you scan the instructions or give me an idea of what make and model the kit is?

Isnt +15 one of the lives on a standard ignition switch?

Not refering to 15v just the connection/wire number

 

Ask an auto sparky but im sure the ouputs from the ignition are numbered 15, 30,30,50,54

 

Im kinda positive this is an ignition live just looked in a Haynes for my old Saab and thats how its numbered, I bought a Gemini remote locking kit on ebay for it but sold the car before I had to fit it

if its + 15 it ignition fed, ie only live whilst ignition is on. if its +30 its live all the time. just thought i would help. ^_^ as said the only reason it needs the ignition feed is to stop you operating it whist driving.

The unit my son just fitted into my car was the cobra 1046 remote unit

 

It works without connecting the 15 positive source , but i will get him to

 

wire it up on the ignition like evss , tiny said

So it is to be connected to the ignition ??? is it numbered the evss said ??

It will be wired to the "12v live when ignition on" so that the doors will most likely auto-lock when you start the car.

 

According my wiring diagrams pin 15 on the back of the ignition barrel is solid black.
