Front Suspension Problems Mk 1 Galaxy

Just completed a 2000 mile round trip to France - positive stuff is that the old girl managed average speed of 68 mph as per usual does not seem to use any oil and with 5 up and top box managed 25 mpg (damn these computers!) ok and it passed the 50,000 miles as well during the trip

 

However it has developed a clunking noise in the suspension on the drivers side. I took it to a (french) garage who said it was a problem with a worn rubber on the part of the suspension that connects the wheel to the steering rack - well thats my best description of what he took apart. Its only noticable on bumps and particularly those damn sleeping police on a smooth road no problem. I have checked under the bonnet and underneath to make sure nothing else could be causing it but it does seem a noise coming from that area. I think he said that it would be best to replace both sides of the suspension but was not sure, he also said that you need to buy the complete 'arm' as the rubber bushes were not replaceable.

if anything folks have reported that oem parts last longer but I think that ford parts have changed so are not so susceptable to failure

Ive just bought and fitted the ones from that ebay seller.

 

A bit too early to comment on the quality of them as they've only been in a fortnight, but I can recommend the seller, mine were here the very next day.

 

I also found these ones with a 17mm flat on the back of the shaft were easier to deal with than the ford ones with a 6mm in-hex stud.
