i am a little confused here.. when i bought my car i was told its a vwpd 115 bhp engine... ok fair enough, i am even sure that it said 115 on the log book but cant remember exactly..

anyway whenever i put in the details of my car on any insurance forms or part request form it always comes back as 110bhp... :(

also the guy i bought it off said it was a 2001 model but its coming back as november 2000 ..

does this mean he lied and it isnt a 2001 and that it isnt the vw pd engine and that it is only 110 bhp.. i will be really upset if ive lost 5 bhp... oh well maybe not ive already lost nearly 200 just by buying it!!!

its confusing as i thought the 6 speed box only came on the pd engines and they were either 90 or 115???

could i have been caught just at the crossover so some places still think its the earlier 110???

Can't you tell by the engine? The engine code should be on the timing belt cover at the top.

Also does it have a screw on cartridge type oil filter that hangs down at the front or one that sticks up?

Model years change every August, so a vehicle manufactured in Sep 2000 will be a 2001 model.

But don't confuse a first registered (which is what is in the log book) with the manufacture date. Manufacture date is always earlier than the first registered date usually at least two months and maybe as much as 12 months or more!

To answer your question - we need the engine number - found.... on the engine....in the logbook.....and on a sticker in the large rear storage compartment. The 3 letters will decide.

If the parts dept. and ins. co. come up with 110bhp then I think its likely that the old AFN 110bhp unit is fitted and not the AUY 115bhp PD unit. You would also have a 2000 model as the 110bhp was replaced by the 115bhp PD in the 2001 model.

Another clue is the colours of the individual letters on the rear Tdi badge - or is that a VW thing?

And don't the PD engines have an engine cover with PD in large letters?

This may just be a problem with the insurer. I've got a Nov 98 TDI which one insurer tells me is a 110 and another tells me is a 90. I just don't know because I have no handbook and any labels etc. are now out of sight or illegible and , since it goes well enough, I'm past caring much bit I shouldlike to know if only for interest.

Your problem is more pressing and I should think that the sort of info that MM has just supplied may help.

However, if there is anyone out there who can help identify each and avery variation by the presence of a bit of green plastic or something similar that may or may not be there, I am sure that there are a lot of owners who would like to be able to identify their lump with some confidence.

It might also be helpful if someone could give some typical acceleration performance for each variation so those of us who aquired older models could know what we should be getting or are missing out on.

Oops! sorry Seatkid. You weren't there earlier.

I've always assumed that it would be possible to do this by engine No. but that depends on having a chart or knowing where this could be found.

ok next chapter..

another insurance company i have just tried gave it back as a 115bhp ghia... (this is the info i have on it)

also it has a large plastic engine cover that looks just like the one my father had on his gttdi 150 but instead of a big ass vw badge on it it has a round ford badge (which looks slightly daft)

also as i mentioned i didnt think they put a six speed manual on the earlier tdi and only on the pd??

i am pretty damn certain that its a 6 speed box or otherwise ive been ramming it into reverse on the motorway... ah the answer to my other question about my lower mpgs!!!

OK, 6 speed = PD

The MM test -

OIL filter metal can hanging down = 110bhp or 90bhp, 2000 or earlier

OIL filter housing pointing up with a big screw on top cover = PD
