lydanial Posted June 5, 2006 Author Report Posted June 5, 2006 forgot to mention on this run... the car WAS fully loaded with a wife.. (thats it loaded already!! :( ) 4 kids ranging from 6-13 and then all the luggage for a 4 day break.. most of it was the 13 year old girls!!! (i got by on a pair of pants and a toothbrush as there wasnt anymore room once my teenager had loaded her stuff).. anyway with things i have seen about weight in the car affecting mpg maybe my results werent that bad???? Masked Marauder Posted June 5, 2006 Report Posted June 5, 2006 I drove all the way to Perth in Scotland with a full car on half a tank of diesel and it is 400 miles. Which is about 48MPG. And my booster heater was running! Quote

Does'nt everyone know you can go ages on the first half tank - - the second half however disappears in next to no time. :o Fuel gauges are notoriously non linear and can easily fool you.... particularly if you like to brim your tank..... :43: Quote
Scorpiorefugee Posted June 5, 2006 Report Posted June 5, 2006 The original figure of low 40s MPG at 75 seems about right but don't forget wind direction and air temperature. Both can make a considerable difference. I recently did a 100+ mile trip and return within an hour or so driving at 75 ish and clocked 43mpg out and 52mpg back. I'm pretty sure that my driving style was very much the same for both trips and there were no serious hills. Fuel consumption on most vehicles increases dramatically above 65/70 - hence our national limit. Also, I find I can always drive more economically with the cruise off by taking advantage of downhills and letting it slow down a little on up hills. Other than that, I think Seatkid put it beautifully. Quote

It was not just a guess. I have had more than 48MPG out of it when I have been driving carefully too! Quote
Ogben Schmutzel Posted June 6, 2006 Report Posted June 6, 2006 Noted these readings from the trip computer after a 160 mile each way trip that involved mostly motorway or good A road driving. Car was loaded with 2 adults, 3x16 year olds, 6 stone Golden Retriever and luggage. Outgoing:Av speed 60mphAv mpg: 44.5 ReturnAv speed 65mphAv mpg 38.6 Interesting that the outgoing trip was taking it easy and mostly at or around the average speed. Though the return only shows a 5mph increase in the average speed the top speeds were much higher. Otherwise normal motoring is around town and mostly in 4 mile trips and I tend to average 38mpg. Oggy. Quote
