Can any one offer any advice on why my 90bhp dies on hills. The turbo doesn't appear to add anything to the power. Typical example 1 in 40 hill top gear 60mph. As soon as the gradient kicks in the engine dies. dropping down to 4th doesn't do anything and the engine won't clear 3000 rpm. Speed will usually drop to 45 50 and if the incline increases the speed drops even more.

It was known last year in France to do 22 mph up hill in second gear - very embarassing eh!!

yes disconnect it - no improvement or stays the same definitely the Maf, but even if it gets worse it still could be the maf - read the threads above

tbh - symptoms appear to be classic maf, although it doesn't always throw a fault code for garage to read

Just looked at the MAF sensor on the motor and found another lead that comes off the lead for the MAF sensor that is loose (not attached to anything) It has two wires connected to it 1. brown and the other black with yellow stripe.

Might this be a cause of my lack of power and if so anyone know where it belongs. The lead is about 8 - 10 inches (200 - 250 mm) in length, so it can't go far away from the Maf Sensor area.

Hang on, if there no improvement when you disconnect it, how can this show that the MAF is faulty? surely this shows that the MAF is ok?

I thought that if there is improvement, then it shows that the MAF is faulty....

If you go and unplug a healthy MAF the performance is dire.

 

So if your performance is dire and you unplug a healthy MAF it will be even worse. If it is the same then clearly the MAF is causing the poor performance.

 

Therefore performance worse or the same - suspect the MAF.

hmmm, when i forst got the VR6, i noticed that it used alot of fuel (NOTHING ELSE)....but there was plenty of power. I asked VW to check it and they said a faulty MAF. they replaced it...everything was alright...i opened the bonnet to put some water in and the MAF wasn't even connected! when i connected it, it didn't feel any different!

Just unplugged the sensor and drove it up my least favourite local hill. What a difference! It can pull the skin off a rice pudding after all.

So I assume the next step is to buy a new one then eh!

yep, the obvious thing to do is to buy a new one- may get a cheap one from your local breakers.

 

 

What if Big Al left it unplugged? does he still have to get a new one or can he just leave it like that?

difference with a new one will be huge and will make a difference to mpg

In that case they probably never replaced it either - hope they didn't charge you too much - :wub: :)

yeah, it was done under warranty :wub:

have you got someting to check the fault codes?

how much of a difference will it make to the MPG? on both vr6 and tdi?

how much difference does it make to a vr6? because, as it is, there is no lack of power!

:D :lol: Big thanks to all those who supplied the advice on the turbo slug. Fittted a new MAF sensor today. WOW what a difference. Looks like the old girl will be staying in the fleet for longer now. Cheers again
