bought a cheap serial cable (without dongle) from usa about 12 months ago. downloaded free edition of the software but can't get VAG-COM to communicate with car.

car is switched on but winxp shows an error box saying device is inexcessable or words to that effect.

has anyone else had similar problems or does anyone know if I can test the cable by doing a simple continuity test?

Hi,

Yes had the same problem on my 2002 Golf TDi. Bought a VAG-COM cable - it also never worked.

I was informed I should have bought a HEXCOM cable instead - see http://www.ross-tech.com/vag-com/hex-com+can.html

The OBD socket on VAG cars is the same type of socket on many models but the signalling is different. So depending on age of vehicle will depend on which cable you will need. It seems that CAN-BUS was introduced around 2004...........

thanks Phil. the cable I have should work and give me basic diagnosis functions. thought $20 was a good deal at the time. for $229 you do get all of the functions and customer service from Ross Tech - trying to cut costs is not always wise
