My 99 Galaxy Tdi 110 ( pre PD engine) goes through alternator drive belts about once every 9 months or so.

Today we have another shredded belt.

I have changed the tensioner spring unit, the tensioner roller and the bar that connects the roller to the tensioner spring unit and taken the bracket that this lot attaches to and had it rebushed in a machine shop.

Yet still it shreds belts.

I understand from this forum that these engines have a reputation for doing this.

Does anybody have any suggestions as to how to rectify this properly.

thanks,

I certainly don't want to contradict you, however, I've been a member here since 2003 and I can't recall many problems - perhaps I'm just having a senior moment here

when you say shredded? does it snap the belt cleanly or does it take chunks out of the edge of the belt? have you checked the alignment of all the pullys? i have read of the lower crank pully slipping and causeing belt wear! if this is not caught soon enough it can cause major problems as the end of the crank gets damaged!

The belt is in pieces- in fact I don't have most of it as it is in many bits.

Do you mean the main crank pulley slipping of the end of the crank? Is it just a matter of tightening it back on?

thanks,

I would be inclined to look at the air con compressor, if it is stiff or seized then your belt is going to get trashed pretty quick.

I have the same problem with my 97 Galaxy 2.3. My Auxillery belt has shredded twice this week. Last night I replaced the belt and the Idler pulley as it looked a bit ruff. Waiting to see if this has fixed the problem.

I have noticed the belt overlaps the edge of the spring Tensioner pulley by 5mm, which would have tendence to push the belt outwards and force the edge of the belt against the crankshaft and coolant pump pulleys. What I can't tell is if its the crankshaft pulley, tensioner pulley or the coolant pump pulley that is out of alignment. I tugged at all three pulleys and they seem ok (no outward movement).

I thinking of replacing the Tensioner as it is looks easy to do, although that

What sort of mileage has the car done?

I would investigate much further if I were you - It seems a little drastic to take a telephone diagnosis as gospel!

If you read this forum you will soon discover that the vast majority of us are not overly impresed with Ford or Ford technical help or advice.

It is not possible for the mains to have gone that much that there is half a centimetre of extra crank sticking out, if it had the the balance wieghts would be hitting the block and the flywheel would be against the end of the engine!

The auxillary belt pulley is bolted to the timing pulley and has a rubber core to prevent resonance. I think it likely you will find that is the problem, the rubber has persished and gone soft.

I was wrong about the crankshaft pulley. When you look from under the car (i.e. with your head on the concrete and car jacked up) and looking straight up you get clear view of the belt alignment. The belt around the tensioner pulley was clearly protruding out further than the coolant pulley and crankshaft pulley.

Removed the tensioner and all became clear. The tensioner spring had deformed and the pulley wheel and rear of the tensioner were not parallel. New tensioner bought for
